M/V Fedra - Without Power & Drifting Toward The Cliffs of Gibraltar

From The Cargo Letter - Oct. 10 2008
225-m, 35,886-gt Liberian flagged bulk carrier M/V Fedra (IMO 8208713), built 1984 and owned by Fedra Navigation SA, lost engine power and started drifting and dragging her anchor in force 8 gale toward the coast on the east side of Gibraltar on Oct. 10. Tugs were deployed and got the vessel under control about 0.5 nm off the coast, until the stormy weather worsened, causing the ship to drift stern first onto the cliffs just below the lighthouse at Europa Point and then swerved alongside the cliffs. The 30 crew members remained on board, but efforts were initated to take them off the ship. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Oct. 10 2008).

Three Salvage Tugs Join The Fight

M/V Fedra Is 24 Years Old And Is Owned By Fedra Navigation SA.

The Rescue Effort Has Not Succeeded

From The Cargo Letter - Oct. 12 2008

M/V Fedra has been fully evacuated by helicopter and shoreside crane amid dangerous weather conditions. Using a crane positioned on the cliff edge above the bow, Gibraltarian rescuers rigged a cradle that was lowered to the seafarers below. In small groups throughout the night, they were hauled up wet, shivering and terrified.

At one point, with 11 men still on board, the operation had to be suspended as the storm intensified.

Despite earlier efforts of three tugs to hold the ship clear of land, her anchor broke and the stern of the vessel smashed against rocks at Europa Point - Europe's most southerly spot.

The powerful waves have meanwhile ripped the vessel in half on the rocks.

M/V Fedra Has Lost Power & Hit The East Side of Gibraltar

M/V Fedra Backs In To A Very Dangerous Point of East Gibraltar

This Stern On -- Backing In -- Has Killed M/V Fedra

Oct. 10 2008

From The Cargo Letter - Oct. 13 2008
Police arrested the captain and two officers of M/V Fedra The men were detained late on Oct 12 on suspicion of contravening port regulations, but were released on police bail pending further inquiry. M/V Fedra was empty (in ballast) at the time of the casualty and was carrying only a small amount of bunkers for her own consumption, believed to be around 300 tons of fuel oil. At least 150 tons of that oil had spilt into the sea by Oct 12 and clean up operations were under way Oct 13. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Tues. Oct. 14 2008).

The men, who have not been charged, were detained late on Oct 12 on suspicion of contravening port regulations. All three were released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The police investigation is running in parallel to a separate investigation by the Gibraltar Maritime Authority, a routine step in cases such as this. The authority's investigation will examine all the technical aspects of the casualty without seeking to apportion blame. Its aim is to draw lessons from the incident. One area of focus for both investigations is the sequence of events that led to the ship hitting the rocks late Oct. 10 evening.

The stern is resting on the seabed firmly wedged into the base of the cliff.

The End of M/V Fedra

By The End of Oct. 16 Clean Up Crews Had Collected some 20 Tons of Fuel From The Beaches of Algeciras Bay & From The Coast of Ceuta.

There Are Reported Plans To Move The Bow of M/V Fedra Into A Gibraltar Dockyard.

NOTE: Please Provide Us With Your Additional Information For This Loss.

EDITOR'S NOTE FOR SURVEYORS, ATTORNEYS & MARINE ADJUSTERS: The Internet edition effort of The Cargo Letter now celebrates it's 8th Year of Service -- making us quite senior in this segment of the industry. We once estimated container underway losses at about 1,500 per year. Lloyd's put that figure at about 10,000 earlier this year. Quite obviously, the reporting mechanism for these massive losses is not supported by the lines. News of these events is not posted to the maritime community. Our new project is to call upon you -- those handling the claims -- to let us know of each container loss at sea-- in confidentiality. Many of you survey on behalf of cargo interests with no need for confidentiality. Others work for the lines & need to be protected. As a respected Int'l publication, The Cargo Letter enjoys full press privileges & cannot be forced to disclose our sources of information. No successful attempt has ever been made. If a personal notation for your report is desired -- each contributor will be given a "hot link" to your company Website in each & every report. Please take moment & report your "overside" containers to us. If you do not wish attribution, your entry will be "anonymous." This will will benefit our industry -- for obvious reasons! McD

* NOTE: The Cargo Letter wants you to know that by keeping the identity of our contributors 100% Confidential, you are able to view our continuing series of "Cargo Disasters." Our friends send us materials which benefit the industry. The materials are provided to our news publication with complete and enforceable confidentiality for the sender. In turn, we provide these materials to you.
