Tragedy At Ain Sokhna - Egypt

10 July 2001

Tragedy On Port Rails

Egyptian National Railway ENR Is Linking The Suez Canal

To The New Port Under Construction at Ain Sokhna.

Ain Sokhna is about 40km south of the Suez Canal on the west coast of the Red Sea.

On July 10 -- Disaster Struck. Two Engines in Collision - 3 Dead

The Yellow trains align and level the track. Here, The Yellow train appears to have been victimized -- hit from behind by the ballast train. The ballast train carrying rocks for laying under the track to provide a solid base has become just too cozy with it's mate.

From Our Eye Witness To This Event:

"No one knows exactly what happened, unfortunately 3 people were killed but it is thought that the brakes failed on the ballast train (or more commonly here in Egypt, the driver fell asleep)."

In A Tragic Consequence

The Ballast Engine Is Atop The Yellow Engine

Is This A Mating Ritual?

Further From Our Eye Witness:
"The Railway is under government orders to finish the rail link as soon as possible as the port is a high profile "Mega-Project" for the Egyptians and is far behind schedule. ENR had no money to complete the link for the last year and progress was slower than a snail until a few weeks ago and the President got involved and kicked their butts into gear.

We will continue to request further information concerning this dramatic event -- but it seems that there is some explaining to do by the ENR.

"This is just a sample of local stupidity that is taken as the normal thing here. You should see the daily carnage on the highways - there is no such thing as a one-way street here even though it may be marked so. American Embassy employees are not allowed on the roads outside of the Cairo ring road after dusk due to the number of deaths on the roads."
