Coast Guard Photo of Icelandic Owned M/V Godafoss At 5:27 a.m. on Feb. 18 2011, Confirms A Problem
M/V Godafoss Was Bound From Fredrikstad In Norway To Helsingborg In Sweden
M/V Godafoss Is At Full Stop And Trailing Oil. Worse, The Area Is In The Upper Oslo Fjord National Park And Near Ytre Hvaler National Park In Southeast Norway
M/V Godafoss Aground
From The Cargo Letter - 17 Feb. 201114,664-gt Antigua Barbuda-flagged container M/V Godafoss (IMO 9086796), with 14 crewmembers on board, ran aground outside Fredrikstad on Feb 17. Two of the vessel's tanks with 250 tons oil each were breached. An oil spill of 2.5 miles was observed and was confirmed to have reached the shore of Akerøya; most of the oil was recovered by a coast guard vessel by Feb 19, and an excavator on a barge is also working to get the oil that has stuck to ice. No injuries were reported. A salvage plan to refloat the vessel is underway. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 22-2-11]

The Captain Had Been Alone On The Bridge Due To Premature Pilot Debark
From The Cargo Letter - 22 Feb. 2011It has now been confirmed that the pilot boat left M/V Godafoss a long time before the vessel had sailed past the hazardous skerries* in the fjord. This mistake is the main reason for the accident, claimed CEO of Eimskip Gylfi Sigfússon. Eimski is the owner of M/V Godafoss.M/V Godafoss will be towed away on Feb. 22, from the location where she ran aground. It is estimated that a 50-meter strip on the ship's bottom is damaged.

On the way to Odense She Left A trail of Oil From The Norwegian Border Down To The Swedish Island of Vinga, A Stretch of About 100 Nautical Miles.
From The Cargo Letter - 18 March. 2011Damage to the bottom of M/V Godafoss, the Icelandic container ship which grounded recently off Norway, is much worse than previously thought.M/V Godafoss grounded near Oslo Fjord in late February and started leaking oil which caused damage to Norway's only offshore national park and required cleanup crews from both Norway and Sweden. The oil spill was not as bad as feared; but now it has been revealed that the hull of the ship will be harder to repair than previously stated. Damage is worst of the starboard side.
M/V Godafoss is now in dry dock at the Lindo shipyard in Munkebo, near Odense, Denmark. So far, the project has been to empty all of the ships tanks (especially oil) and thoroughly clean the bottom. Once that is completed, repairs can commence.

In Icelandic, Godafoss Means "Waterfall of The Gods" or "Waterfall of The God"
Editors Note -Named after the waterfall was SS Godafoss, an Icelandic ship carrying both freight and passengers, that was sunk by a German U-Boat in World War II, resulting in great loss of lives.Now the modern M/V Godafoss has taken her own measure of hard luck, but with a happier ending.
