A fine carriage has left the Port of New York, headed for the refined gentry in 1857 New Orleans. Shipping agents Saxton & Seabury have moved a "Five Seat Rockaway" carriage, with its wheels & other parts down the coast, around Key West, and to the Port of New Orleans. The ocean freight was prepaid, with four original bills of lading. Once one of the originals was surrendered at destination, one having traveled with the goods, the other bills of lading "stand void". As always, note that preprinted text confirms receipt of the cargo "in good order & condition", just as today. Also as today, the "marks & numbers" are in the left hand margin. March 6, 1857, over one hundred forty three years ago. As today, the bill excepts "dangers of the sea" as a cause of loss for which the ship will be responsible.Visit our Ocean Cargo Claims Center for more information on the lessons on this page.
