Within hours of the capture of St. James Park, Panama-flagged bulk carrier Navios Apollon, with crew of 19, was captured by pirates off the southern coast of Somalia on Dec. 28. [29-12-09]

 

British-flagged chemical tanker St. James Park, Tarragona, Spain to Tha Phut, Thailand with crew of 26, was captured by pirates off Somalia's coast on Dec. 28. This is reportedly the first merchant vessel to have been hijacked in the Gulf of Aden in nearly 6 months. [29-12-09]

 

M/V Oostvorne was reportedly in collision with M/V San Andres in the Straits of Gibraltar on Dec. 18. Significant damage and potential cargo loss reported aboard Oostvorne. [29-12-09]

 

3,832-dwt M/V Sormovskiy-3052 (IMO 822379, built 1984, Russia flag) allided with a berth during mooring in Svetliy Harbor, Kaliningrad, Russia, on Dec. 21 at 0714LT. A crane inside the South Carolina State Ports Authority property in North Charleston struck and killed a truck driver on Dec. 23 at approximately 1100LT. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 28-12-09]

 

Russian cargo M/V Baltiyskiy 101 (IMO 7612436) encountered heavy weather in the Baltic Sea on Dec. 25 after departure from St. Petersburg for Rotterdam. 185-m Greek-owned Aegean Wind (IMO 8130746)with crew of 24, caught fire in the Caribbean off Venezuela's coast on Dec. 25. 9 crew members reported missing and 4 others suffered minor injuries. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 25-12-09]

 

F/V Rubicon, with crew of 3, took on water approximately 60 miles northwest of Clearwater, Florida, on Dec. 23. The Coast Guard rescued all aboard. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 25-12-09]

 

38-ft fishing boat Alisa Marie was struck by large wave and sank 25 miles east of Barnegat Light, New Jersey on Dec. 23. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 1 person and is searching for 2 others. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 25-12-09]

 

13-m wooden-hulled ferry Catalyn B, with 59 passengers and 14 crew, and F/V Anatalia collided in Manila Bay on Dec. 24. The Catalyn B sank within 10 minutes after the collision. 3 people reported killed, 46 passengers and crew rescued, others reported missing. 136-ft Crowley tug Pathfinder grounded on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on Dec. 24. The vessel and crew had completed an ice survey and were heading back to the port of Valdez when it struck the reef. The vessel was freed under own power but reported breach and diesel fuel spill. 89.61-m river cruise ship and former tug Serena (ex-Unterwalden, built 1949), with 90 passengers aboard, ran aground on the IJssel at Westervoort, Netherlands, on Dec. 23. The vessel was freed the same day with tug assistance. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 25-12-09]

 

3,261-dwmt M/V Eren (ex-Volgo-Balt 133, IMO-8857760) ran aground in Dnestr Estuary, Ukraine, on Dec. 25 at 1545LT. The vessel was refloated on Dec. 25 at 0120LT with tug assistance. [From our Moscow Correspondent Mike Voitenko, 25-12-09]

 

200,018 Bahamas-flagged cruise ship Alabtros (IMO 7304314) suffered water ingress on Dec. 20. The vessel had been towed out of drydock at Blohm & Voss Yard in Hamburg at the time, where it had been overhauled. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 24-12-09]

 

Atlantic ferry Atlantic Vision struck the dock at Port aux Basques, Canada, on Dec. 22. No injuries but vessel damage reported. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 24-12-09]

 

Ferryboat Almirante Barroso capsized int he Amazon river, between the municipalities of Prainha and Monte Alegre, 70
kilometers away from the city of Santarem, Brazil, on Dec. 21. 94 passengers reportedly survived while 7 people were killed. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 24-12-09]

 

23.65-m German pusher tug Berlin suffered water ingress from ice flows at Eberswalde on the Oder-Havel-Canal, Germany, on Dec. 21. The vessel was successfully stablized by response teams. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 24-12-09]

 

740-ft India-flagged bulk carrier APJ Suryavir, with crew of 28, became disabled and went adrift 544 miles southwest of Adak Island on Dec. 20. The vessel experienced adverse weather conditions causing severe rolls. While plans were implemented for abandoning ship and Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau and bulk carrier Maersk Altair were dispatched to the scene, power was restored and APJ Suryavir continued underway to Portland before assistance could arrive. 2,077-gt container ship Pride of Brailla (IMO 9141340), en route to Blyth in rough seas, lost 2 containers overboard on Dec. 17. Shipping off Flamborough Head, Yorkshire was advised of the navigational hazard. The containers were last seen floating one metre above the waterline at position 5416.8N 000.00.3W. 259-m, 138,585-dwt Panama-flagged bulkcarrier Taharoa Express (IMO 8903117), with crew of 25 and 65,000 metric trons iron sand, suffered cargo shift resulting in list while loading at Port Taharoa, Waikato, on Dec. 17. 40-gt Devon F/V Etoile Des Ondes sank in the English Channel after collision with another vessel off the coast of Cherbourg on Dec. 20. The Celtic-Line-ferry Norman Voyager rescued three crew but one man is reported missing. 33-ft Coast Guard boat was in collision with a recreational vessel in San Diego Bay on Dec. 20. Of the 13 people aboard the vessels, 1 person was killed and 5 others injured. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 21-12-09]

 

Moldovan cargo M/V Aras-1 (IMO 8892057), with crew of 13, broke in two and was tossed on the beach near Sochi port, Rusisa, on Dec. 20. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen and our Moscow Correspondent Mike Voitenko, 21-12-09]

 

740-ft India-flagged bulk cargo freighter APJ Suryavir, with crew of 28, suffered engine failure and went adrift in the North Pacific on Dec. 20. The vessel is in ballast and reported unstable; the crew intends to evacuate to good Samaritan freighter 1,110-ft Maersk Altair, on Dec. 21. No injuries or water ingress reported as of Dec. 20. 53-m Turkish cargo M/V Ümit K, with crew of 11 and cargo of marble from Marmara Island to a harbor in Ordu’s Ünye district, ran aground in the Bosporus on Dec. 17. A tugboat was dispatched to the scene. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 21-12-09]

 

163-m Ukranian-flagged cargo ship Lady Juliet, with crew of 26, ran aground at the Canakkale Strait on Dec. 17. The vessel was unable to refloat under own power; tug assitance was dispatched. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 21-12-09]

 

129-ton F/V Geumyang, with 25 fishermen aboard, sank in heavy weather off South Korea's southern port city of Busan on Dec. 20. 20 rescued, 5 reported missing. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 21-12-09]

 

2,500-dwt Australian passenger M/V Reef Escape (IMO 8512475), with 32 passengers, encountered rough weather and was forced to seek shelter during a one-week cruise from the Fijis as a result of cyclone Mick on Dec. 13. The vessel, operated by Captain Cook Cruises, experienced flooding and was ultimately beached at Waya Island with damage reported. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 21-12-09]

 

144-m, 11,590-gt Singapore-flagged chemical tanker M/V Bunga Kantan Dua (IMO 9327140, built 2005) grounded at Al Kasa Al Yemenia Reef, 9.5 miles off the Saudi Arabian coast, on Nov 16. The vessel was successfully refloated and on Dec. 13 crossed the Johor Bahru Anchorage with a crushed bulbous bow. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 21-12-09]

 

Tug American Eagle suffered fire in the Elizabeth River near Norfolk International Terminals on Dec. 17. No injuries reported. The tug is owned by Norfolk Dredging Co. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 21-12-09]


F/V Pubnico Explorer sank in waters off Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, on Dec. 16. Crew rescued except captain who is reported missing. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 21-12-09]

 

202.6-m, 24,731-gt Panamanian-flagged cargo ship Danny F II (ex-Don Carlos, built 1976, IMO 7359462), Uruguay to Syrian port of Tartous with crew of 75 and 6 passengers as well as 10,000 sheep and 20,000 cattle, sank 11 miles from the Lebanese city of Tripoli in a heavy rainstorm on Dec. 17. 40 confirmed rescued and 11 confirmed dead. 66.94-m Inland water craft Vagari (ex-Beta) collided with another inland water craft on the Gouwe in Waddinxveen, Netherlands, on Dec. 16. Hull damage to Vagari reported. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 21-12-09]

 

Dutch ferry Gorinchem VIII, serving between Gorinchem and Woudrichem/Loevestin with capacity for 400 passengers, allided with pilings in the Linge harbor on the Waal on Dec. 17 at 0745LT. No injuries reported. The incident was attributed to technical failure resulting in the vessel going adrift. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 21-12-09]

 

Unidentified tour boat, travelling between between Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh some 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of Cairo, with 13 tourists and crew of 8 aboard, capsized in the Red Sea in rough weather on Dec. 16. No injuries reported. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

260-ft coaster Fingal, with crew of 6 and laden with timber, ran aground on rocks at the north-east tip of Jura, UK, on Dec. 15. The 60-year-old Polish captain was taken into custody, possibly facing aclohol-related charges. Two lifeboats and a helicopter were involved in a five-hour rescue operation after the Fingal grounded and began taking on water. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

57-ft F/V Pubnico Explorer took on water and sank off Port Maitland while en route to its homeport in Meteghan, Nova Scotia, on Dec. 16. 3 men rescued, the captain remains missing. Coast Guard vessels Westport and Edward Cornwallis responded to scene, a C-130 Hercules and a Cormorant helicopter out of 14 Wing Greenwood have been involved in the search for the missing fisherman. Liberian flagged bulker JPO Delphinus, with load of 51,027 tons fertilizer, grounded in Pakistan's deep sea port at Gwadar on Dec. 8. The vessel was successfully salvaged on Dec. 16. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

12,296-gt St. Vincent/Grenadines-flagged cargo M/V Lady Juliett (IMO 8225204), with load of 6,900 tons fertilizer, ran aground at Canakkale, Turkey, on Dec. 17 at 0033LT. The vessel ran into a breakwater of a marina while being underway from the Ukrainischen port Oktyabrsky to Skikda in Algeria. The tugs Kurtarma 2 and Söndüren 5 and the rescue boat Kıyı Emniyeti 6 were sent to the grounding site. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

743-gt Turkish cargo M/V Ümit K (IMO 8975976), with crew of 11, ran aground on rocks at Bostancı Dilek Kayalıklarında near Istanbul on Dec. 17. Tug Söndüren 3 and the rescue boat Kıyı Emniyeti 5 were dispatched to the grounding site. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

4,300-dwt Antigua-Barbuda flagged cargo M/V Allegretto (IMO 9353395) ran aground at Svartklubben north of Grisslehamn when about to enter Hallstavik, Sweden, on Dec. 15. Hull breach and water ingress reported. The vessel was refloated under own power. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

499-gt German-owned, Netherland-Antilles-flagged, cargo M/V Fingal (IMO 8324658), with cargo of wood, ran aground in the Corryvreckan Gulf on Dec. 15. Water ingress reported. Coastguard Rescue teams from Jura and Crinan were sent to the area to monitor the situation and the RNLI lifeboats from Oban and Islay were requested to launch as well as scrambling the Royal Navy Rescue helicopter 177 from HMS Gannet. The ingress of water could be controlled and the vessel was making its way under its own power to Oban escorted by the Oban lifeboat and the Fisheries Protection Vessel Minna. The rescue helicopter and the Islay RNLI lifeboat have been stood down. There has been no threat of pollution to the area and all 6 crew aboard are reported uninjured. Greek tanker M/V Alexandroupoli, with crew of 12, ran aground in the Gulf of Patrasski near Patry on Dec. 14. Initial refloating efforts were unsuccessful; tugs called. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

1,626-dwt Tansanian-flagged tanker M/V MAG 1 (IMO 7036735) drifted aground at Sokhumi, Georgia, on Dec. 14 at 0600LT. The machine room flooded and the stern became submerged. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

2,139-gt Togo-flagged cargo M/V Karim Junior (IMO 7624439) struck a breakwater and sank at a port in western Algeria on Dec. 15. One sailor swam safely to shore, two sailors drowned and six others reported missing. The wreck is approximately 200-km west of the capital, Algiers. 37-m, 401-gt Norwegian catamaran ferry Helgeland (IMO 9177076), with 16 passengers, allided with a buoy while entering the port of Lovund on Dec. 13 at 2200LT. The ship suffered damage at the bow and scratches at the hull above the waterline and remains berthed at Lovund. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

40-ft F/V My Col Col caught fire 200 yards off the shore from Ocean City while heading north in the Atlantic Ocean on Dec. 14. The crew of 2 were evacuated by a nearby Good Samaritan vessel. The fire was tackled by a TowBoat U.S. boat but was burned close to the waterline. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

17.5-m, 44-gt French trawler Jegwenic - LR 612338 (ex-Kingfisher) suffered water ingress 50-km southeast of the isle Oléron on Dec. 14. A Dauphin-helicopter of the Naval Base at La Rochelle was on scene and delivered an additional dewatering pump with which the water ingress could be brought under control. Also the rescue boat SNS 085 from Port-Médoc assisted with dewatering facilities. In the midday hours the Jegwenic was safely berthed in its homeport La Rochelle. Chinese tanker M/V Sea Bay was in collision with German offshore service transformer platform BARD 1 in Flushing on Dec. 5. The Sea Bay suffered a gash of five meters above the water line. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

367-gt Swedish ferry Siletta Ace (IMO 8010532), with 30 passengers and crew of 7, allided with a quay in Helsingborg on Dec. 14. The vessel suffered considerable damage and two crew members and 1 passenger were reported injured. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 17-12-09]

 

4,975-dwt M/V Vanadiy (IMO 8852813) suffered fire while anchored at Azov port road on Dec. 12. The fire destroyed half of the vessel's superstructure, but cargo was reported undamaged. [From our Moscow Correspondent Mike Voitenko, 14-12-09]

 

White's Ferry snagged a tree and became stranded in teh Potomac River on Dec. 10. 30 passengers were stranded for about 3 hours. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 14-12-09]

 

80-ft F/V RGT II, with crew of 3, took on water in the Gulf of Mexico 33-nm northeast of South Padre Island on Dec. 12. Coast Guard Station South Padre Island launched a 33-foot Response Boat-Medium and Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi launched an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter to the boat's reported position. The Coast Guard Cutter Manatee, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Corpus Christi, was diverted from its patrol to assist with the rescue effort. Crews were able to stabilize the flooding by using dewatering pumps, and the Coast Guard RB-M crew escorted the fishing vessel back to Coast Guard Station South Padre Island. 56.01-m, 802-gt Norwegian tanker M/V Hordafor II (IMO 7720843) ran aground in the Austefjord south of Bergen on Dec. 11. The ship refloated under own power. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 14-12-09]

 

14.98-m Norwegian F/V Tor Viking ran aground northeast of Frøya on Dec. 12. Water ingress reported. The vessel was patched and successfully refloated. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 14-12-09]

 

371-ft, 5,000-gt cargo M/V Mariano Lauro (IMO 9331804), Riverview to port of Tampa with load of phosphate, ran aground at the mouth of the Alafia River Channel, Florida, on Dec. 10. The vessel was blocking the river channel and thereby blocking vessel traffic. The vessel was freed on Dec. 11 with the assistance of two tugs. 70-ft, 114-gt Norwegian F/V Øksnesværing - N 0092Ø caught fire at the quay of the Seljeseth Mekaniske Verksted in Børøya in the Hadsel-community on Dec. 11 at 0430LT. No injuries but severe damage to vessel reported. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 13-12-09]

 

32-m Dutch F/V Ensis - KG 8, from Kortgene, Netherlands, ran aground approximately 5 miles off the coast on Dec. 10. Response teams were able to prevent the vessel from capsizing and towed it to Noordland for repairs. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 13-12-09]

 

Togolese-flagged cargo M/V Salla 2, Greece to Haifa with crew of 12, sank 70 approximately 70 miles off Naqura on the Lebanon-Israel border on Dec. 12. UN forces, with the help of Israel's military, have launched a rescue operation off the coast of the Lebanese port of Tyre. 1 person rescued, 11 people reported missing. 136.8-m, 5,547-gt Panama-flagged cargo M/V Ogan Bey (ex-Stintfang, Funda C, IMO 7106932) sank 7 miles off Ereğli town in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak on Dec. 12. 2 crew members perished, 12 others rescued. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 13-12-09]

 

55.5-m, 510-gt Lianxin, with crew of 4, reported capsized in waters off Shantou City in southern Guangdong Province on Dec. 10. No survivors found. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 13-12-09]

 

Two competitors in the world championship powerboat race Dubai Grand Prix were killed on Dec. 11. The two killed were driver Mohammed Majid Al Muhairi of United Arab Emirates and throttleman Jean-Marc Sanchez of France. They lost control of their boat Victory 1, which flipped and landed upside down. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 13-12-09]

 

7.6-ton F/V Mingyeong, with crew of 4, capsized after collision with 2,339-ton bulk carrier Shingchang No. 5 in waters off southwestern South Korea, approximately 31-km southwest of Gunsan, on Dec. 11. 1 crew member reported killed and the other 2 reported missing. Ferry New Jersey, of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Fleet, ran aground in the Delaware Bay between Lewes and Cape May at the southern approach of the Cape May Canal on the Higbee Beach side on Dec. 10 at 2108LT. The vessel was refloated with rising tide at 2300LT and was brought to a nearby berth where the 35 passengers and 20 cars were disembarked. Sri Lanka-registered F/V Wind Marine 8 caught fire and sank in the Bay of Bengal. Two Indian Coast Guard personnel had been taken hostage by the crew of the F/V on the night of December 9/10. They were released on Dec 11 afternoon on the intervention of the Indian Navy. However, the fishermen refused to be apprehended by the Navy. A Naval warship and Sri Lankan authorities were trying to convince the fishing vessel to follow it to an Indian port but despite repeated efforts, the vessel did not comply with the advice. It stopped in a position approximately 100-nm east of Chennai at 2230 hours after which it was seen on fire around midnight. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 13-12-09]

 

281-m Liberian-flagged container M/V Maersk Duffield, Singapore to Brisbane, suffered engine room fire near Mud Island in Moreton Bay, Australia, on Dec. 10. The vessel had on board a crew of 24 and a pilot from the Port of Brisbane. One crew member was airlifted to Royal Brisbane Hospital for smoke inhalation, but is in stable condition. 128.8-ft American casino ship Sun Cruz X suffered fire in the Steiner shipyard in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, on Dec. 9. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire after working for over an hour. No injuries reported. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 10-12-09]

 

Towing vessel Sam S sank on the Ohio River at mile marker 39.5 near Chester, West Virginia, on Dec. 9. Some pollution but no injuries reported. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 10-12-09]

 

105.63-m Dutch inland tanker M/V Margaux (ex-Ellen) was in collision with 109.98-m German inland tanker M/V Marisa at the De Krammer port near Bruinisse, Netherlands, on Dec. 8. Pollution reported but contained. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 9-12-09]

Dubai-Muscat Offshore Race organizers reported the crew may have drifted into Iranian waters after experiencing propeller problems. British diplomats are demanding immediate release, but an Iranian official has said "serious" measures will be taken against the UK yacht crew if it is proved they had "evil intentions." N332-m, 156,565-gt Greek-flagged tanker Maran Centaurus (IMO 9073050), with crew of 28 and load of oil from Saudi Arabia to the U.S., was captured by Somali pirates 600-nm northeast of the Seychelles on Nov. 29. The cargo is worth at least US$20 million. Reports suggest that nine pirates operating from a high-speed skiff carried out the hijacking. The vessel is owned by Centaurus Special Maritime Enterprise (ENE). Its crew is made up of 16 Filipinos, nine Greeks, two Ukrainians and one Romanian. Ferry Coco-4 capsized and sank in the Tetulia river near the town of Lalmohan in Bhola, approximately 300-km south of Dhaka, Bangladesh on Nov. 27. At least 46 people killed. 89.95-m Dutch inland tanker M/V Vestland (ex-Harpen 105, built 1957) allided with a bridge on the Rhein-Herne Canal near Oberhausen, Germany, on Nov. 25. F/V Newfoundland Pearl, with crew of 5, suffered fire and sank approximately 330-km east of St. Johns on Nov. 24. 3,201-dwt Georgian-flagged freighter Beryl (IMO 8858764) was in collision with 3,258-dwt Comores-flagged Santa Victoria (8857693) in dense fog in the Azov Sea on Nov. 25. The Beryl sank as a result of the collision, while the Santa Victoria sustained only some damage. N750-ft Liberian-flagged oil tanker Cancale Star, with crew of 24, was attacked by Nigerian pirates off Benin's coast on Nov. 24. One crew member killed (Chief Officer, second in command) and two others wounded. Pirates did not gain control of the vessel, but reportedly escaped with the contents of the ship's safe. The ship's Hamburg, Germany-based owner, Chemikalien Seetransport, said the crew captured one of the alleged pirates and turned him over to authorities in the port of Cotonou in Benin. The incident raises concerns that Nigerian pirates, operating on the opposite side of Africa from Somali pirates, are extending their reach and that the waters off West Africa are also dangerous. Cargo M/V Sirocco (IMO 9268849), enroute Vyborg to Flness with load of fertilizers, allided with beacon Ityapalu while sailing the channel from Vyborg to the Baltic Sea on Nov. 20 at 0005LT. M/V Gipanis, enroute Petropavlovsk to Severo-Kurilsk, Kuril Islands, with 15 crew and 36 passengers, reported disabled with water ingress 4 miles off Povortniy Point, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, on Nov. 21. Turkish cargo ship Düden, with crew of 27, suffered fire approximately 160-miles off the Brazil coast on Nov. 22. The Brazilian navy dispatched two frigates, Bosisio and Constituichao, to the scene. 1 fatality and minor injuries reported. 8,324-gt British Columbia ferry Northern Adventure (IMO 9257735, built 2004) experienced 7-10-m waves between Prince Rupert and the Queen Charlotte Islands on the voyage from Prince Rupert to Skidegate on Nov. 24. The vessel turned back to return to Prince Rupert. Minor injuries reported as well as cosmetic damages and damages to four cars as well as damage to the vessel's starboard bow thruster. 225-m, 33,000-metric ton freighter CSL Assiniboine, hauling soybeans from Toledo, Ohio to Baie Comeau, Quebec, suffered engine failure and ran aground in the St. Lawrence Seaway on Nov. 22. Indonesian ferry Dumai Express 10 sank in rough waters off Sumatra Island on Nov. 22. Rescuers saved more than 230 people aboard, but 9 people reported killed and an unknown number remain missing. The ferry left on an inter-island voyage in the morning and reportedly sank in poor weather 90 minutes into the trip from Batam to Dumai in Riau, a province off Sumatra island in western Indonesia. The area is about 600 miles (900 kilometers) northwest of Jakarta. The ship sank about 30 minutes after huge waves hit its bow and water started seeping in. 65-ft F/V Patricia Jean lost steering and went hard aground on the west break wall in Point Judith Harbor of Refuge, Rhode of Island, on Nov. 21. 67-m Polish inland craft Andromeda ran aground in strong winds on the Hunte near Elsfleth, Wesermarsch community on Nov. 19. 52-m, 541-dwt Norwegian-flagged M/V Biostar (ex-Kvarten, IMO 6828806) grounded near Tysnes as a result of strong winds and suffered water ingress at Sandvikvåg north of Stord on Nov. 19 at 2225LT. The ingress was controlled with the assistance of resposne teams and towed to a quay at Fitjar. The vessel previously ran aground in June 2005 at Sunnhordland off Seløy in the Husnesfjord. Russian icebreaker Captain Khlebnikov, with over 100 tourists, scientists and journalists on an Antarctic cruise, had trouble freeing itself from ice near Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea this week and will be delayed by several days from its intended arrival at Ushuaia, Argentina. The lateset report has the vessel now successfully moving through ice and just 100 meters away from clear water according to vessel owner Fareastern Shipping Co. [19-11-09]

 

NU.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama, heading toward the Kenyan port of Mombassa under Captain Paul Rochford, was attacked by Somali pirates for the second time in seven months on Nov. 18. An on-board security team repelled the attack by using evasive maneuvers, small arms fire and a Long Range Acoustic Device. No injuries reported. The vessel was hijacked by Somali pirates in April, culminating in (then) Captain Richard Phillips being held hostage in a lifeboat for 5 days before navy SEAL sharpshooters freed him while killing 3 pirates. NSt. Vincent & Grenadines flagged Ukranian cargo M/V Lady Juliet was unsuccessfully attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Nov. 16. Pirates firing Kalashnikov assault rifles and rocket-rpopelled grenades approached the vessel, but came under return fire from a Navfor team protecting the ship. [17-11-09]

 

N22,294-dwt Singaporean-operated chemical tanker M/V Theresa VIII, heading for Mombasa, Kenya, with crew of 28 North Koreans, was hijacked and captured by Somali pirates 180-nm northwest of the Seychelles on Nov. 16. NSpanish trawler Alakrana, hijacked last month along with its crew of 36, was released by Somali pirates on Nov. 17 and is reportedly sailing freely towards safer waters with crew safe and sound, under escort by two Spanish warships. The vessel was seized 400-nm northwest of the Seychelles island of Mahe. The Spanish government confirmed the vessel's release but did not comment upon reported ransom of US$3.5 million, with the Spanish prime minister saying only that the "government did what it had to do." A keel-laying ceremony was hosted by Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia, for the next generation U.S. aicraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) on Nov. 14. Susan Ford Bales, daughter of President Ford, served as the vessel's sponsor and keel authenticator for the cermony, chalking her initials onto a metal plate which will be welded and permanently affixed to the vessel. Enhancements to vessel design include flight deck changes, improved weapons handling systems, and a redesigned island, all resulting in anticipated increased aircraft sortie rates. The design also includes new nuclear power plants, increased electrical power generation capacity, allowance for future technology upgrades, efficiencies for reduced workload for sailors - translating to a smaller crew size and reduced operating costs for the Navy. N23,709-dwt Greek container ship Filitsa, built 1996, sailing under Marshall Islands flag and carrying chemicals to South Africa from Kuwait, reportedly captured by pirates approximately 513-nm northeast of Seychelles after a 5-hour chase across the Indian ocean on Nov. 11. The ship belongs to the Greek company Order Shipping Co. Ltd. The incident came one day after the Seychelles and EU signed an agreement allowing deployment of EU troops on the Indian Ocean islands to counter maritime crime and permitting EU naval forces to detain suspected Somali pirates in waters off the Seychelles, where piracy has recently surged. Similar agreements have already been entered by the Seychelles with the United States and France. It is alleged by some critics that the Seychelles may actually being harboring pirates in hope for foreign financial, military and development aid. [15-11-09]

 

29-ton South Korean F/V 3 Dae Kyong, with crew of 9, was in collision with 3,843-ton Hong Kong cargo M/V Joshu Maru on Nov. 15. 4 fishermen killed and 3 others missing after the F/V overturned. No injuries reported aboard the cargo vessel. Japanese and South Korean ships and aircraft were searching the area Sunday for the missing crew members. [15-11-09]

 

1,184-ft, 226,000-ton Royal Caribbean cruise ship Oasis Of The Seas, with 16-decks, arrived at Port Everglades on Nov. 13 after a two-week journey from Finland, where the vessel was constructed at a cost of $1.5 billion. The vessel will spend 3 weeks at the port before making its first regular voyage Dec. 5. The vessel is almost 40 percent bigger than the cruise industry's next-largest ship and five times bigger than the Titanic. It features 2,700 cabins and can hold 6,300 passengers and 2,100 crew members. [15-11-09]

 

570-ft Crowley barge La Princesa broke free from its tow in Virginia Beach, Virgina and ran aground on the beach 75-100 yard away from a fishing pier on Nov. 13. The barge was under tug tow from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Pennsauken, New Jersey, with about 30 types of chemicals on board in containers when the cable snapped. Initial inspections by a crew from the Coast Guard's Atlantic Strike Team, based at Fort Dix, New Jersey, indicate no pollution. North Korean patrol boat No. 383 exchanged gunfire with South Korean Navy vessels in the West Sea on Nov. 10. No. 383 was taken under tow after incurring severe damage. The North Korean boat No. 383 crossed the Northern Limit Line, the de facto maritime border between the Koreas, despite repeated warning messages from the South, prompting a warning shot from a South Korean Navy vessel at 11:36 a.m. on Nov 10. 80,551-dwt container M/V Hyundai Kingdom in regular liner service from Far Eastern ports including Busan, Shanghai, Yantian, Hong Kong, Huangpu, Kaohsiung and Gwangyang to Tacoma, Seattle and Vancouver, encountered strong weather and lost several containers and suffered engine room damage on Nov. 6. The vessel arrived at Tacoma on Nov. 8 and was inbound on voyage 091E at the time. The vessel, operated jointly by Hundai, APL and MOL is German owned and classed by Germanischer Lloyd. Antigua-Barbuda-flagged cargo M/G Theseus (IMO 9199256) spilled oil on the Northsea 11 miles west of Helgoland. A survey plane of the German navy detected the spill, which measured 11 square km. Sternwheeler Willamette Queen, with 20 passengers and crew, grounded near Mclain Island, Salem, Oregon, on Nov. 8. No injuries, pollution or damage reported. Unidentified passenger vessel collided with an unidentified cargo vessel carrying coal in waters off South China's Guangdong Province on Nov. 5 at 2000LT. Two Dutch tourists were confirmed dead and nine others were injured aboard the passenger vessel. No injuries aboard the cargo vessel reported. The passenger vessel was traveling from a port in Hong Kong and was en route to Guangdong. The collision occurred in a sea lane near Lianhuashan Port in Panyu. 63-ft sport fishing boat Absolutely sank 20 miles east of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Nov. 6. The F/V Pacifics responded to the scene and rescued the crew of 2. 141-m Liberian-flagged bulkcarrer Medea K (IMO 7632553) suffered list and flooding in the Gabonese port Mayumba on Oct. 19. The vessel's crew of 22 was forced to abandon ship and are awaiting repatriation by the vessel's owner, Greece's Hecate Shipping. The vessel cannot navigate, is still listing and is disabled. The Medea K flies the Liberian flag and is classed by the Polish Register of Shipping. The crew has reportedly been staying in a hotel with no assistance or instruction from the vessel owner. German-flagged cargo M/V Ilka (IMO 8504947) was in collision with Panama-flagged bulkcarrier Atlantic King in the Kiel Canal near the pilot station Schülp at Rendsburg on Nov. 6. The Ilka, which was bound for Rotterdam, suffered damage to its port side bow and proceeded to Brunsbuettel. 8,622-dwt German Antigua-Barbuda-flagged container M/V Francop (IMO 9277412) was raided and seized by Israeli forces at the port of Ashdod on Nov. 4. Reportedly 36 containers contained ammunition and weapons earmarked for Hezbollah, originating from Iran, and loaded aboard the Francop at Domiat, Egypt. 70-ft tug Capt. Larry Barkins, with 4 aboard, sank in Mobile Bay, Alabama, on Oct. 31. 3 people were rescued by a MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans. The 4th person made it shore in the tug's 14-ft skiff. The tug is believed to have approximately 600-gallons of fuel aboard. Pollution teams are assessing the situation. 16,173-gt Iranian freighter Zoorik (IMO 7602211), with 37 aboard, was pushed onto rocks in heavy weather and broke in two at Luhuashan in eastern Zhejiang province on Nov. 1. All aboard were rescued without injury, however Chinese authorities continue to struggle to contain the damage at the mouth of the Yangtze River following the oil spill. This incident occurred on the same day as another vessel carrying 100 metric tons of hydrochloric acid also sank in the Yangtze River following a collision. 570-ft double-hulled tanker Port Stewart grounded 1.5-nm east of the Shell Yabucoa Harbor, Puerto Rico, on Oct. 27. No injury or pollution reported, but environmental response teams dispatched as precaution. The vessel was refloated the same day with tug assistance. 40-m, 432-gt F/V Acheador, with crew of 17, took on water and was in danger of sinking 42-nm off Durban. The crew abandoned ship and were rescued by helicopter and responding vessels. Oil rig West Atlas, Montara wellhead platform, which has spewed oil into the Timor Sea for 10 weeks, was engulfed in flames on Nov. 1 after the company responsible for the spill came close to successfully plugging the leak. All personnel reported safe. The fire was extinguished Nov. 3. The rig began leaking oil on Aug. 21 and has since spewed between 400 and 2,000 barrels of crude into the Timor Sea each day. 13,273-gt British container vessel Husky Racer (IMO 9144720) lost 18 containers at the Strom Quay into the Weser in Bremerhaven on Nov. 3. 662-gt Danish offshore supplier Blue Capella (IMO 7607613) was in danger of sinking as a result of severe water ingress in its machine room in the Northsea, 140-miles west of Esbjerg, on Nov. 2. Liberian-flagged bulkcarrier SCL Elise (IMO 9313421), en-route to Santander, suffered machine failure on the Kiel Canal at Kudensee and allided with pilings on Oct. 24. Cargo ship Pac Alkaid spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, near the Mississippi River near Louisiana, on Oct. 31 / Nov. 1. Response teams aboard 220-ft Louisiana Responder are working with the Coast Guard to address clean up. Divers plugged a 2-inch hole in the vessel's hull which was the cause of the spill. While it is unclear the exact amount of oil spilled, it is estimated 12,000 gallons. [1-11-09]

 

Unidentified vessel with approximately 40 aboard sank in rough seas far off northwest Australia on Nov. 1. More than 20 people feared dead. Merchant vessel LNG Pioneer responded and undertook rescue efforts. Authorities did not know whether the sunken vessel was carrying asylum-seekers, who are the subject of fierce domestic debate as the government struggles to deal with the influx. [1-11-09]

 

A crewman aboard Navy destroyer USS Ramage accidently fired a machine gun into the Polish port city of Gdynia on Oct. 28. The incident happened as the ship was in port after retuning from an international exercise in the Baltic Sea. It was preparing to leave later that day, according to the Navy. Polish military police boarded the ship to investigate and Navy officials said the crew of the Ramage fully cooperated. No U.S. sailors were taken into custody by Polish authorities. [1-11-09]

 

Coast Guard C-130 was in mid-air collision with Marine Corps Cobra helicopter off the coast of California on Oct. 29. The Coast Guard plane was in the area searching for a missing boater, while the Marine helicopter was heading to San Clemente island on a training mission. N38-ft S/Y Lynn Rival, Seychelles towards Tanzania by British couple Peter and Rachel Chandler, attacked by pirates on Oct. 23. The two are believed to have been taken aboard a captured containership, reportedly the Kota Wajah, where they are being held. The yacht was found abandoned and empty. [29-10-09]

 

2,203-TEU Hamburg Süd containership Alianca Europa collided with bulk carrier Ocean Diamond outside the Brazilian port of Santos on Oct. 16. The collision occurred in the approach channel at Santos. No injuries but damage to both vessels reported. [29-10-09]

128-m ferry Marco Polo, operated by Jadrolinija Rijeka and with 41 passengers and 64 crew, ran aground on the Croatian island of Sit on Oct. 24 at 0250LT. No injuries reported. U.S. and Guatemalan authorities captured a makeshift submarine loaded with an estimated 10 metric tons of cocaine 175 miles off Guatemala's Pacific Coast on Oct. 22. 4 men aboard the vessel - 3 Colombians and 1 Mexican - were arrested by U.S. agents. If the size of the seizure is confirmed, it will be the largest drug bust in Guatemala, which is becoming a transit point for Mexican trafficking cartels. [25-10-09]

Fast combat support USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8) suffered Blackhawk helicopter crash 20-nm off the coast of Fort Story, Virginia, on Oct. 22 at approximately 2000LT. One service member reported dead and eight reported injured. Injured service members were evacuated from USNS Arctic by a second Army helicopter participating in the training and taken to a local Norfolk hospital for treatment. USNS Arctic has returned to Naval Station Norfolk and the damaged helicopter remains onboard. The cause of the crash is under investigation. A rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City and a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet, N.J., arrived on scene to assess the situation for assistance if needed. N200-m Italian-flagged cargo M/V Jolly Rosso was attacked by pirates approximately 460 miles east of Mombasa, Kenya on Oct. 22. Pirates open fired on the vessel with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. The vessel successfully evaded the attack without report of injury. [22-10-09]

 

N180-m Panama-flagged bulk carrier M/V Al Khaliq hijacked by pirates near the Seychelles on Oct. 22. The vessel reported two pirates having boarded before communication was cut off with the crew. The EU force confirmed that 6 pirates boarded, with two attack skiffs in tow and the "mother skiff" having been brought aboard the vessel by crane. 682-ft American ocean liner Platnium-II (Ex-SS Oceanic, SS Independence) is under investigation by the Indian Union ministry of environment & forests (MoEF), which has sought a detailed report from the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) and Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB). The vessel arrived at Alang under tow of Tug Barakuda-1 on Oct. 7. The vessel, believed to have 200 metric tons of asbestos-containing material, was beached for breaking without approval from authorities. The Indian Platform on Ship Breaking is demanding that US recall the ship. The vessel had previously been lying idle at Dubai for over a year. NSpanish F/V Alakrana, with crew of 36, issued distress signals of a pirate attack against it off the coast of Somalia on Oct. 2. The vessel is under the control of pirates. Preliminary investigations suggest the blaze may have been caused by an electrical short-circuit. A second fire, possibly resulting from embers from the first, occurred on Oct. 9. M/V Lihir Express suffered mechnical problems in rough seas and as a result lost approximately 11 containers overboard off the northwestern coast of Papua New Guinea on Oct. 3. 2 containers lost are reported to be loaded with grade B explosives. On Oct. 7, PNG's National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) issued a warning for all vessels to beware and navigate with extreme caution and to report any sightings. Towing vessel C.B. Ford collided with the "Old Greenville Bridge" (about halfway between Little Rock, Arkansas and Jackson) resulted in six rock barges breaking free on Oct. 4. All vessel river traffic was closed from mile marker 531 to 541 for approximately 3 hours and all barges were recovered. No injury or pollution reported. 24-m, 177-gt Norwegian speed ferry Vågsfjord (IMO 9196723), homeport Tromsø and capacity for 146 passengers, allided with a quay in Skrolsvik at Senja on Oct. 4. 9,200-dwt Marshall Islands falgged roro M/V Maestro Sun (IMO 8401133) suffered steering gear failure and went adrift in heavy weather in the North Sea off Thorsminde on Oct. 4. A Danish rescue helicopter from Skrydstrup evacuated 8 of the 25 crew, the remainder stayed on board. 2,317-gt Greek roro M/V Captain Michalis (IMO 7226639, ex- Suurlaid, Nordic Frost, Ocean Caroline) was in collision with 52,071-dwt Malta-flagged bulk carrier Santana (IMO 9237101) in the Aegean Sea southeast of Mykonos, near Amorgos, in calm weather on Oct. 4. The Captain Michalis, with cargo of cement, sank within a few minutes. 1 fatality reported, 8 crew members rescued. The Santana, which was underway from the Ukraine to Thailand, remained stable and entered the port of Ermoupolis at Syros Island for survey. 1,375-gt Panamanian-flagged freighter Silver Sea, with crew of 14, capsized and sank in heavy weather (Typhoon Parma) off the coast of Taiwan on Oct. 4. 3 people reported rescued by helicopter, 1 body recovered, 10 people missing. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 6-10-09]

 

Antigua-Barbuda flagged cargo M/V Adele C (IMO 9083914) lost an anchor in heavy weather in the Northsea shortly after having departed Hamburg, Germany for Barletta, Italy, on Oct. 4. Liberian-flagged container M/V Navi Baltic (IMO 9386718) lost 9 containers overboard approximately 11-km north of Terschelling, Netherlands, on the night of Oct. 3/4. 3 containers are still missing; 2 drifted on the beach at Ameland; 2 two more on a sandbar at Schiermonnikoog; 1 was salvaged; and 1 reported sunk. Dutch cargo coaster Sea Charente, on passage to Glasgow with crew of 5 and cargo of corn gluten pellets, suffered cargo fire on Oct. 2. The Solent Coastguard was notified and organized a response team. The fire was successfully contained. [From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen, 4-10-09]

 

45-ft F/V Sheriff took on water in the Delaware Bay near Cape May on Oct. 2. A rescue boat from Coast Guard Station Cape May and a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., were dispatched to the scene. 188-m, 41,000-dwt Bahamas-flagged bulkcarrier Petersfield (IMO 8309713) ran aground off Kitimat, British Columbia, on Sept. 25. Significant bow damage reported. 134-m, 7,278-dwt Liberia flagged cargo M/V Arctic Sky (sister vessel of Arctic Sea), underway from Finland to Alexandria in Egypt with cargo of timber, ran aground at Öregrund, Sweden, on Oct. 2 at 0230LT. 1,048-dwt Russian-flagged hopper vessel Skrunda, with 4 crew, ran aground in Luzhskaya Guba Bay, Gulf of Finland, position 59.47.25N 028.22.63 E., on Sept. 30 at 0400LT. No damages or spill reported. [From our Moscow Correspondent Mike Voitenko, 1-10-09]

85,920-gt Bahamas-flagged cruise ship Carnival Legend (IMO 9224726) collided with 74,136-gt Bahamas-flagged cruise ship Enchantment of the Seas (IMO 9111802) at the port of Cozumal on Sept. 30 at 1815LT. The Carnival Legend had just departed from its berth when heavy winds pushed it into the Enchantment of the Seas. A tug tried in vain to prevent the collision.
