VESSEL LOSS DISPATCHES FOR MARCH 2009


 

NThe European Union Maritime Security Center reported that pirates captured and seized 9,000-ton Greek-owned and Panamanian-registered M/V Nipayia, with 19 crew, 450 miles east of southern Somalia city Kismayo on the afternoon of Mar. 25.


NThe European Union Maritime Security Center reported that priates captured and seized 23,000-ton Norwegian-owned and Bahamian-registered M/V Bow-Asir 250 miles east of the southern Somalia city Kismayo on the morning of Mar. 26.

 

Barge-based restaurant Salty Parrot, docked in the North Little Rock Maritime area in Arkansas, was found partially submerged on the morning of Mar. 26. The cause of water ingress is unknown, but the boarding tug Patriot was threatened and hence cut loose. The barge is owned by the city of North Little Rock and leased to the Mississippi Riverboat Co. 35-ft Norwegian F/V Nordholem N-0053-V sank west of Røst in the Nordland community on Mar. 26 at 1453LT. The crew of 3 was rescued without report of injury. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 28 2009).

 

Nuclear-powered icebreaker Yamal collided with tanker Indiga during ice escort in the Kara Sea in the Gulf of Yenisey on Mar. 16. The tanker was in ballast; no pollution reported and no damage to the icebreaker's nuclear reactor reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 28 2009).

 

34-ft F/V All American sank off the coast of Maine on Mar. 26. The Coast Guard has recovered one body and is searching for another person. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 28 2009).

 

16-m F/V Amber Rose, with 12 crew, reported taking on water 20-nm South of Cape Point, South Africa, on Mar. 21. NSRI Hout Bay and NSRI Kommetjie launched assistance vessels to respond. The stricken vessel was first escorted, then towed, to mooring in Hout Bay harbor. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 28 2009).

 

523-gt passenger M/V Mercator (built 1950, ex-Aure, ex-Trøndelag, ex-Vikingfjord, ex-Galtesund, ex-Mathilda) sank in the Finish port Lovisa on Mar. 20. The vessel was dewatered and refloated. The vessel had been berthed at a quay during the winter. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 28 2009).


62.26-m Inland tanker M/V Energie grounded on the Elbe at Abbendorf, Germany, in stormy weather on Mar. 24. The vessel was successfully refloated after cargo was lightered. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 28 2009).

 

75-m Norwegian cargo M/V Falksund (IMO 8420725) grounded in strong winds at low tide at Haugesund, Norway, on Mar. 26 at 0800LT. The rescue boat Bergen Kreds was able to refloat the vessel 15 minutes later. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 28 2009).

 

4,833-gt cargo M/V Cordoba Carrier collided with Philippine cargo M/V Sko in Cagayan in Oro City, Philippines, on Mar. 25 at 0600LT. The M/V Sko was berthed at the time. The Coast Guard responded to the scene amid reports of pollution and water ingress. The severely damaged M/V Sko was towed to shallow waters and surrounded with booms. 85-ft tug Essayons, 91-years old, took on water and sank at Duluth, Minnesota and sank on Mar. 23. The tug now rests in about 20 feet of water, with only its smokestack and part of its cabin still protruding from the harbor. The vessel was no longer operating. Its original steam engine was donated to the Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center where it remains on display. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 28 2009).

 

71-ft F/V Lady Mary, with 7 crew, sank 65 miles off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey, on Mar. 24. The Coast Guard received an emergency beacon alert a 0730LT. 2 crew were rescued, 1 body recovered and 4 crew reported missing. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 28 2009).

 

N416-ft, 13,038-ton Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) car carrier Jasmine Ace, built 1995, was fired on by pirates in two high-speed boats about 480 miles (about 900km) east of Somalia around at 22:10 JST on Mar. 22 at 1610LT. The vessel undertook evasive maneuvers causing the pirates to give up chase after approximately 40 minutes. The vessel was underway from the port of Sharjah, UAE to Mombasa, Kenya, with a load of 377 used cars. Vessel damage but no injuries reported. The vessel proceeded to safer waters under own power. 70-m Dutch inland water craft Engelina 2, built 1966, suffered cargo shift in heavy seas and was in danger of capsizing in the Brabant shipping lane in the Easter Scheldt, Netherlands, on Mar. 23. The vessel was safely towed to shelter and stabilized. Water ingress reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Mar. 23 2009).

 

57-m, 419-gt Norwegian ferry Fratfjord (IMO 7728505, built 1979) allided with a quay at Koparneset in Vanylven on Mar. 22 at 530LT. 3 cars were reported damaged and the ferry ramp as well. 140.6-m, 7,852-gt, 9,400-dwt Antigua-Barbuda-flagged container M/V Karin Schepers (IMO 9404077) ran aground west of Saltholm, an island located in Øresund between Denmark and Sweden, on Mar. 22. The incident was attributed to the helmsman falling asleep and the vessel going off course. The captain and helmsman were found intoxicated. The vessel was refloated on Mar. 23 at 0900LT. Sewage barge Humer Star, with 400 tonnes of diesel and sludge, reported taking on water and in danger of sinking off Southampton on Mar. 21. Environmental response teams alerted and engaged to contain any spill. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen and our Correspondent Charles Emberton (Sat. Mar. 21 2009).

 

55-ft catamaran Makayla and Noah drifted onto the beach from anchor on the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge near Oregon Inlet, North Carolina, on Mar. 20. Efforts are underway to lighter the over 300 gallons of diesel fuel onboard. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 21 2009).

 

Towing vessel Cheryl Stegbauer, with 8 barges, allided with the Popps Ferry Bridge in Back Bay, Biloxi, Mississippi. The bridge collapsed as a result of the impact. 65-m, 1,135-gt Russian cargo M/V Rand (IMO 7006625, built 1970) suffered machine failure north of Rolvsøy, Finnmark, on Mar. 19. The vessel went adrift in waves of 6-m. After significant effort, 23-m rescue boat Reidar Von Koss was able to establish a tow. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 21 2009).

 

Submarine USS Hartford, based in Groton, Conn, was in collision with amphibious ship USS New Orleans, based in San Diego, in the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and the Arabian peninsula on Mar. 20. 15 sailors aboard the USS Hartford reported slightly injured but able to return to duty. No injuries reported aboard the USS New Orleans. Both ships were heading to port when the incident occurred in the narrow strait at night, and the submarine was submerged at the time. The New Orleans suffered a ruptured fuel tank, resulting in an estimated spill of 25,000 gallons diesel fuel. Both vessels were able to operate under own power. 109.97-m Dutch inland M/V Linde, with cargo of 2600 tons naphtaline, ran aground in strong currents at Rheidt, Germany, on Mar. 19 at 0545LT. In the afternoon inland tanker M/V Fidelitas arrived and began lightering the dangerous cargo for refloating efforts. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 21 2009).

 

Barge train pushed by tugboat SS Basti suffered water ingress on the Berlin-Spandau shipping canal at the Charité-Hospital in Berlin, Germany, on Mar. 19. The vessel immediately berthed in the Humbold Harbour near the Central Station where divers found the hull had been breached. The vessel was temporarily patched and dewatered and moved for cargo lightering. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 21 2009).

 

67-m Dutch inland water craft Relax (built as Ilse Gottker in 1957) ran aground on the Neckar river at the Frießing mill near Bad Wimpfen, Germany, on Mar. 18. The incident affected river traffic. 110-m, 7,090-gt general cargo M/V J. Tong (IMO 9010060) ran aground in heavy weather after its port anchor chain broke at the west coast of Taiwan, 3 miles from Taichung port, on Mar. 14. Salvage operation is being arranged by the vessel's owner Josco Nanjing. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Thurs. Mar. 19 2009).

 

Empty cargo M/V Jindal Tarani, owned by the Everette Company, allided with a bridge (the guard wall of the swing ascule bridge at Kidderpore Port) in Kolkata, India, on Mar. 18. The bridge suffered extensive damage. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Thurs. Mar. 19 2009).

 

34-ft yacht Maelys reported being struck by cargo vessel in heavy fog 15 miles southeast of Lizard Point, Britain, on Mar. 18. Falmouth Coastguard requested the launch of the Lizard RNLI Lifeboat and scrambled the Royal Navy helicopter R193 with a salvage pump on board. Warship Tyne was also nearby and offered assistance to Falmouth Coastguard. The Falmouth Coastguard identified the cargo vessel as 80-m M/V Helen, whose crew of 6 subsequently admitted the collision. 64.4-m, 844-gt Norwegian ferry Solskjel, with 15 passengers and 8 cars, allided with a quay at Stranda on Mar. 18. A car was damaged in the incident as well as the ferry and the quay. The vessel has capacity for 399 passengers and 35 cars. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Thurs. Mar. 19 2009).

 

Russian F/V Kisuka foundered near Kunashir, an island of the Southern Kuriles, on Mar. 19. Two members of the Russian crew of four were saved suffering from strong hypothermia. The captain and the chief engineer were reported missing. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Thurs. Mar. 19 2009).

 

129-m, 9,628-gt Norwegian cargo M/V Astrea (IMO 891789) was in collision with 63-m, 1,208-gt Faroe Islands flagged cargo M/V Hav Sund at the Sotra bridge near Bergen, Norway, on Mar. 18. Coast Guard vessel Aalesund responded to the scene. The Astra had suffered hull damage on port side, the Hav Sund at the port side bow. Both ships proceeded to Bergen where they berthed at the Tollbod quay in Jekteviken. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Mar. 18 2009).

 

F/V Miss Dollie took on water and was abandoned at sea 30 miles southeast of Cape May, New Jersey, on Mar. 17. Nearby vessel Amy Marie, a rescue boat from Coast Guard Station Cape May and a rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, New Jersey, responded to assist. 21,154-gt German-flagged Scandlines ferry Sassnitz (IMO 8705383) allided with a gate of the Kiel Canal lock in Brunsbüttel, northern Germany, on Mar. 15. The vessel was allowed to proceed to Kiel where it will be berthed for investigations and survey. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Mar. 16 2009).

 

7,545-gt Cyprus-flagged cargo M/V JRS Canis (IMO 9339014), en route to Copenhagen, allided with the staging of the southern lock of the Kiel Canal in Brunsbüttel, northern Germany, on Mar. 15 at 0920LT. The incident was attributed to dense fog. The ship itself suffered scratches and dents mainly on starboard side. After the propulsion was cleared and the investigations were finished the vessel was allowed to continue its voyage. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Mar. 16 2009).

 

88-m, 1,862-gt Dutch cargo M/V Eems Star (IMO 9421659), Rotterdam to Kiel with 5 crew and cargo of corus aluminum, suffered cargo shift and was in danger of capsizing 11-km north of Terschelling in the morning of Mar 15. Up to 25-degrees reported list. Reponse teams dispatched, one crew member was evacuated. The list was reduced and the vessel reached Harlingen safely under tow by tug Vlieland. Unidentified Vietnamese coal transport vessel, with 7 crew, sank in strong gales in South China Sea on Mar. 13. A rescue helicopter and rescue vessel Nahaijiu 196 were delpoyed. Rescuers found 3 bodies, 4 people reported missing. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 14 2009).

 

Tow boat Lucille Brooks struck object/debree and took on water in the Intracoastal Waterway near Pelican Island, Texas, on Mar. 10 at 0520LT. The vessel was reported stable in the afternoon. No pollution reported. Coast Guard investigators are examining the vessel to determine what caused it to take on water. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Mar. 14 2009).

 

Tug Harford Beaver, owned by National Maintenance and Repair, sank at mile marker 196.5 on the upper Mississippi River on Mar. 11. No injuries reported. The wreck has been marked with a lit buoy and is being monitored by tug Eager Beaver and a Coast Guard boat. No pollution or injuries reported. Vessel traffic affected. 185-m, 23,737-dwt cargo M/V Pacific Adventure (built 1991), New Castle in New South Wales for Brisbane, lost 31 containers in rough seas (from Cyclone Hamish) off Point Lookout on Stradbroke Island, Moreton Bay, on Mar. 11. The containers were each filled with 20 tonnes ammonium nitrate, which was also spilled onboard the vessel's deck. From our Correspondent Russell Forbes (Wed. Mar. 11 2009). UPDATE>> M/V Pacific Adventure was holed by its loose overboard containers, causing spill of estimated 20-30 tonnes of bunker oil. Huge oil slicks are drenching beaches at the northern end of Moreton Island and Queensland and are expected to reach Bribie Island. Extensive wildlife loss already reported. Authorities are today inspecting the damage, but say the clean up could take months, possibly years for environmental recovery. The ammonium nitrate spill is expected to also cause environmental problems by way of algal blooms. A spokesman from the Pacific Adventurer's owner, Swire Shipping, said the cargo was correctly stowed in line with international regulations. 30-ft Norwegian F/V Lille Anne capsized and sank west of Støtt on Mar. 12 at 2300LT. Several ships and a Sea King helicopter in vain searched for the skipper until the foremidday of Mar. 13. The cause of the incident is not immediately known. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Mar. 13 2009).

 

89-m, 4,500-dwt cargo M/V Steenbank (IMO 9313876), with crew of 8 and pilot onboard, suffered power failure and ran aground at Risskjæret northeast of Risøya, Norway, on Mar. 11 at 0120LT. The vessel was inspected by response teams, refloated and towed to Florø at 1000LT. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Mar. 13 2009).

 

Norwegian trawler Nybo from Midsund, at anchor, was struck by trawler Kvannøy in the Varanger fjord, Norway, on Mar. 9 at 0150LT. The cargo hold of Nybo was flooded causing the vessel to list. 180 tons frozen fish were gutted, 120 could be saved. Flooding was controlled and the Nybo proceeded to Vadsø under own power. No injuries reported. Repairs will be carried out at a yard in Harstad. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Mar. 13 2009).

 

17,054-gt Cyprus-flagged cargo M/V Ocean Leader (IMO 8314809), with full load, suffered a gash to the hull of 10 centimetres and machine problems on Mar. 12 and sought shelter at Ålesund, Norway. The vessel was escorted from its position 12 miles off the Norwegian coastby the Coast Guard vessel Ålesund and tug assistance was requested. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Hungarian bargetrain MHRT 1809/B pushed by tug Köszeg suffered water ingress on the Danube river at km 2251.1 at Pleinting, Germany, on Mar. 11. The captain was able to reach Vilshofen and response teams assisted with dewatering and patching efforts. The captain was allowed to proceed to Enns where the cargo was to be unloaded, before the ship headed to Linz for permanent repairs. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri.. 99.6-m Cyprus-flagged, Swedish-owned tanker M/V Stoc Marcia, built 2007, suffered oil discharge in the Kiel Kanal during its passage from Brunsbuettel to Kiel on Mar. 11. The leak was discovered shortly before the vessel arrived in Kiel-Holtenau and the ship berthed at a bunker pier. The fire rescue was called and the ship was surrounded with oil booms. Cargo M/V Kum San suffered fire off Mogadishu on Mar. 8. German frigate Rheinland-Pfalz responded to the scene and assisted until the fire was under control. The Rheinland-Pfalz then proceeded to Mombasa to hand over captured pirates to local authorities. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Mar. 11 2009).

 

4,255-tonne South Korean freighter Orchid Pia was in collision with 10,833-tonne Panamanian-flagged car carrier M/V Cygnus Ace in rough seas off Izu Oshima Island, approximately 120-km south of Tokyo, on Mar. 10. Orchid Pia is reported sunk. Japanese rescue vessels and aircraft dispatched to look for 16 missing sailors. Japenese television showed images of some damage to the bow of Cygnus Ace, which was expected to arrive at Yokohama. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Mar. 11 2009).

 

7,435-dwt general cargo vessel 2Ibn Batouta reportedly sank in the Red Sea approximately 35-nm off the Egyptian coast opposite the port city of Safaga on Mar. 9. Initial reports claim 9 crew rescued and 17 crew reported missing. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Mar. 11 2009).

 

Chinese cargo M/V ZHedai No. 82399 sank in Zhoushan in east China's Zhejiang Province near Zhoushan Island on Mar. 9 at 0845LT. One man was saved, but six men reported missing. The incident was attributed to shifting cargo causing the vessel to capsize. Search efforts are ongoing for the missing sailors. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Mar. 11 2009).


Chinese cargo M/V Shandong collided with sunken wreck and reported water ingress 15 miles south of Shidao Port on Mar. 9 at 0400LT. The M/V Shandong was safely towed to Shidao Port. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Mar. 11 2009).


1,718-gt Portuguese trawler Santa Mafalda (IMO 6805268, built 1968) berthed in the port of Vigo, Spain, with a large gash in its bow below the waterline on Mar. 8. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Mar. 11 2009).

 

98-gt Copenhagen-based salvage vessel Soloven struck 43-m, 287-gt passenger M/V Wappen von Borkum (IMO 7525918) at the port of Emden, Germany, on Feb. 8. As a result of the impact, the M/V Wappen von Borkum struck the 24-m vessel Emswind (ex-Ossi Barck). Preliminary damage assessment was 40,000 Euro. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Coaster Alrita sank off the west coast of Norway on Mar. 2. at 1755LT. From our Correspondent Brynjar Wiig (Wed. Mar. 11 2009).

 

2,478-gt Moldavian dry cargo M/V Pavel (IMO 7830923), en-route Azov port – Mersin, Turkey, ran aground in the Mediterranean Sea, position 37.35.07N 026.30E on Mar. 9. at 1055LT. No injuries or spill reported. Underwater hull survey and salvage is intended. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen and our Moscow Correspondent Mike Voitenko (Wed. Mar. 11 2009).

 

Dive boat Chok Somboon 19, with 31 people aboard, sank off Phuket province, Thailand, on Mar. 9. 6 people reported missing. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Mar. 9 2009).

 

Russian reefer M/V Sungach (registered in Nakhodka), with 16 crew, ran aground in heavy weather near the island of Paramushir, one of the Kurile Islands that separates the Sea of Okthotsk from the Pacific Ocean, on Mar. 8. No injuries or spill reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Mar. 9 2009).

 

F/V Monie Marine was in collision with 158-m bulk carrier Maritime Master 11-nm off Cape Recife, South Africa, on Mar. 8 at 2112LT. The F/V reported taking on water and 26 of its crew of 30 were evacuated during pumping efforts. The bulk carrier reported bow damage and anchored 2-nm off Algoa Bay. Ferry boat Niyaama, en route to Baa atoll Eydhafushi with passengers and cargo, ran aground on the island reef and sank on Mar. 8. The vessel usually ferries cargo between Eydhafushi, Thulhaadhoo, Hithaadhu and Malé. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Mar. 9 2009).

 

31,643-gt bulk carrier United Marujo, with crew of 26, ran aground off Barangay Poblacion, Talisay City in Cebu, on Mar. 4. The captain was detained for violating the city ordinance protecting Lagundi Reef; his crew stayed aboard the ship. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sun. Mar. 8 2009).

 

591-gt Norwegian cary ferry Kvam ran aground in heavy winds off the ferry quay at Åram on Mar. 8 at 1150LT. The vessel was later refloated and towed to Vesund for repairs. No injuries reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sun. Mar. 8 2009).

 

900-ft, 81,380-gt double-hulled oil tanker SKS Satilla struck debree, took on water and suffered list in the Gulf of Mexico, 65 miles south of Galveston Island, on Mar. 6. F/V Marina, with single skipper aboard, reported missing west of Andøya, six miles northwest of Stø, Norway, on Mar. 2. 2,489-gt Netherlands-bound Russian cargo M/V Mekhanik Tyulenev was arrested by Norwegian police for suspicion of collision after radar data showed the vessels close to each other and suspicious color traces on the cargo vessel's bow. The vessel had on board 144 passengers and crew and six vehicles. Sister vessel Maharlika II and Coast Guard vessel Sarv 004 and M/V Millenium Uno were dispatched to render assistance. The sister vessel of M/V Skarpö (IMO 6417528), M/V Ramsö, was called to replace the vessel but itself ran aground near the Trinntorps bridge at Tyresö. 24-m German F/V Christa, homeport Wismar, was in collision with a 8.4-m sport fisher off Timmendorf neat Poel Island in the Baltic Sea on Feb. 28 at 0750LT. The sportfisher broke in two and sank. 138-ft tow boat Wally Roller, owned by American Commercial Bargline, ran aground near Syracuse on Feb. 27 after reportedly striking a large and submerged rock on Feb. 27. 5,602-gt Dutch vessel M/V Zillertal (IMO 8918734, built 1962), Rotterdam to St. Petersburg with general cargo, reported engine room fire and being adrift in ice at position 60.02.1N 028.46.1E close to Buoy 10, Seskar island, Gulf of Finland, on Feb. 25 at 0050LT. Engine room sealed and filled with CO2. Nearby Russian icebreaker Kapitan Sorokin monitoring situation, but M/V Zillertal reported engine room ventilated and no help required. 65-m inland water vessel Quinto was in collision with 110-m inland water tanker Galileo on the Rhine at Königswinter, river-km 643, on Feb. 25 at 0600LT. Dense fog is believed to be a factor in the incident. The tanker suffered a hull breach causing diesel fuel to spill into the river. Local fire rescue crews were on the scene. 135-m, 6,540-gt Dutch cargo M/V Medemborg (IMO 9142514), Russia to the Netherlands with cargo of coal, suffered cargo hold explosion in the Kattegat near Skagen, Denmark, on Feb. 23. Two injured Philippine crewmembers were evacuated by a rescue helicopter. After the explosion it was ordered to anchor in the Aalbæk bight until investigations were finished. Hungarian shiptrain, consiting of tug Köszeg and the barge MRHT 1809/B ran aground on the Danube river at km 2,251.1 near Pleinting, Germany, on Feb. 15. Water ingress reported, the vessels proceeded to Vilshofen for dewatering and proceeded to Enns for cargo lightering and to Linz for permanent repairs. 58-ft commercial F/V Icy Mist, with 4 people aboard, reported taking on water in heavy seas off Akutan Island, Alaska, on Feb. 25 at 0438LT. The Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Juneau dispatched multiple aircraft and cutter Munro. The F/V grounded and was in danger of breaking up. 220-m, 53,700-gt Italian-flagged cruise ship Costa Romantica (IMO 8821046), Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires with 1,400 passengers, suffered generator room fire and brief blackout 7 miles off the Uruguayan sea resort of Punta del Este on Feb. 26. 182-m, 28,564-gt Cyprus-flagged bulker carrier Weser Stahl (IMO 9186687) allided with jetty 4 while approaching the Brunsbuettel locks of the Kiel Canal bound from Bremen to Sczeczin in Poland on Feb. 26 at 0200LT. 112-ft F/V Alyeska was reportedly struck by rogue wave 131 miles north of Akutan, Bering Sea, on Feb. 25. The impact knocked out windows and navigational equipment. 69,200-gt German cruise ship Aidaluna (IMO 9334868) entangled its propeller in an obstruction during sea trials on the Northsea off Borkum on Feb 23. Towing vessel Loyd C sank while working on the Ohio River near Owensboro on Feb. 23. The Coast Guard has approved a vessel salvage plan and is investigating the cause of the incident. 85.69-m inland tanker M/V Dolfijn (ex-Christina), with cargo of methanol, suffered fire on the Rhine at Millingen on Feb. 23 at 2300LT. NM/V Saldanha, sailing under a Maltese flag with cargo of coal and 22 crew, enroute to Slovenia, was attacked and boarded by pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Feb. 22. Nearby UK warship HMS Northumberland was approximately 100km away and received radio request for assistance from M/V Saldanha and dispatched a helicopter to examine the scene. 240-ft cruise ship Ocean Nova, with 64 passengers and 41 crew, ran aground in high winds near an an Argentine base in Antarctica on Feb. 17. There was no immediate danger but passengers were evacuated as a precaution. The vessel was on its 8th day of a nearly two-week expeditio nexploring the polar circle, which had embarked from Ushuaia, Argentina's southernmost city. (Mon. Feb. 23 2009).

 

77-m, 1,282-gt Cayman Island-registered coast Sea Ruby (IMO 9006447), with cargo of cement and six crew, ran aground on the sand bar at Teignmouth, England, on Feb. 23. A tug was dispatched for refloating efforts at high tide. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 23 2009).

800-ft tanker Yasa Golden Dardanelles, with 620,000 barrels of low sulfur fuel oil, grounded 22 miles off the coast of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico on Feb. 19. 435-gt German passenger catamaran M/V Nordlicht (IMO 88186015) allided with a quay in Emden after completion of the annual overhaul at the Nordsee Werke Emden while starting for a trial on the Northsea on Feb. 21. Latvian trawler Unora, owned by Aleksandrs Blohins, was struck by heavy waves, capsized and sank in the Baltic Sea, 37 miles off Bornholm Island, on Feb. 17. 4 crew were rescued out of a life raft and brought to the port of Ventspils aboard the Latvian F/V Bonivars. 93-m, 2,973-gt Norwegian cargo M/V Line, built 1976 Sietas Yard Hamburg, suffered bow thruster failure and allided with a quay in the port of Wismar, Germany, in the evening of Feb 19. 80-m German inland vessel Carmen suffered water ingress while passing the Main-Donau-Canal in the morning of Feb 19. The vessel was in danger of sinking at the lock Hilpoltstein. 84-ft gambling boat Pair-O-Dice broke free from its mooring and ran aground on Sunset Key off Key West, Florida on Feb. 17. The vessel was declared derelict after owners failed to timely respond to the incident. A contractor was hired with money from the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund and placed a temporary patch to the vessel's hull to stop progressive flooding and removed hazardous materials. 45-ft F/V Candace Eve ran aground in John's Pass in Madeira Beach, Florida, on Feb. 18 at 1845LT. The Coast Guard contracted Southern Waste Services Thursday to remove approximately 350 gallons of diesel fuel and other contaminates from the vessel after the owner was unable to free the grounded vessel. Container M/V Rajeeb-1, underway from Al Bisra Port in Iraq with a cargo of 86 loaded and 55 empty containers, collided with bulk carrier Azeez, underway from Hamriya Port to Bander Abbas in Iran with cargo of 19,800 tons iron, in the shipping canal between Hamriya shore and the Palm Deira building site on Feb. 18. German inland water craft Marienberg, owned by Imperial Reederei & Spedition GmbH in Duisburg, was in collision with an unidentified Belgian vessel on the Mittelland Canal at Wolfsburg, Germany, on Feb. 18. The vessel suffered water ingress and was escorted to the quay in St. Goar where it was dewatered and later towed to Lahnstein where the cargo was to be loaded onto another vessel. 173-m, 23,663-gt Skania (former Superfast I, IMO 9086588), Polish port Swinemünde to Ystad in Sweden, collided with German F/V Gitte 12 miles east of Ruegen Island, Germany, on Feb. 17 at 0120LT. The ferry continued its voyage after the end of investigations by the Neustadt police. In Ystad a thorough damage survey will take place. 15.8-m, 5,000-dwt vessel New Star (IMO 9021904, built 2005 as Xin Tong Yu 108), with 16 crew, sank during heavy weather near the far-eastern Russian port of Vladivostok on Feb. 15. The crew abandoned ship and boarded 2 inflatable life rafts. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 16 2009). UPDATE>> Owners of the Chinese cargo vessel New Star that sunk on Saturday in Russian waters issued a statement claiming the ship had been fired on by the Russian navy. UPDATE>>Sierra Leone-flagged New Star was fired upon by a Russian warship after the vessel reportedly illegally crossed its border, left Nakohdka without permission and reportedly failed to respond to warnings. With the vessel damaged, 8 crew died after taking to stormy waters in open raft. 5 crew were rescued by Russian border guards from another (closed) raft. Nuclear British submarine HMS Vanguard collided with Nuclear French submarine Le Triomphant in the Atlantic during the night of Feb. 3/4. Le Triomphant took at least three days to limp back to her home port, although she did not have to be towed. 18.85-m, 28-gt Norwegian F/V Dolstind M 47S, originally built 1909, caught fire in the port of Kleppestø near Askøy on Feb. 8. The vessel wheelhouse was reported completely gutted. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 16 2009).

180-m, 27,611-gt Malta-flagged oil tanker Kashmir (IMO 8800248) collided with container M/V Sima Buoy 7-nm off Jebel Ali port on Feb. 10 at 0835 GMT. Both vessels caught fire, sending up a thick plume of black smoke. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 16 2009).

 

Vessel Anugerah Mulia sank in heavy seas off Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province on Feb. 10. 6 crew reported missing. The Indonesian navy and the provincial search and rescue team were still looking for the missing crew. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 16 2009).

 

37-ft F/V Katie Rae ran aground near Santa Rosa Island, California, in the night of Feb 10. The Coast Guard launched an HH-65 helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles, located at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and a 47-ft response boat from Coast Guard Station Channel Islands. 63-m, 562-gt Danish dredger vessel Argonaut (IMO 732690) ran aground in the Lillebælt on Feb. 10. The vessel was refloated the same day and proceeded into the harbor of Fredericia where it was investigated. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 16 2009).

5,068-gt Panama-flagged cargo M/V Soraya (IMO 7350064), bound for Dubai, sank in Iranian territorial waters on Feb 11. While 12 sailors have been rescued by a passing ship, five crew - all Indians - are still reported to be missing. The company that owns the cargo ship and the Dubai coastal guard have sent two barrages to lift the ship which is still half-submerged. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Romanian inland water craft Diana Maria, Regensburg to Budapest with a cargo of 430 tons soy, ran aground on the Danube river at Mariaposching on Feb 6. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 16 2009).

1,774-gt Shetland pelagic trawler Research - LK 62 was in collision with 67.4-m Norwegian trawler Fiskeskjer M525H in Aalesund, Norway, on Feb. 9. Severe damage to Research - LK 62 was reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 16 2009).


Two unidentified ferry boats collided on a river in eastern Bangladesh on Feb. 8. One boat sank, killing 10 women and children. The other vessel was reported to have fled the collision. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 16 2009).

 

Indonesian warship Upang-582, of the Eastern Fleet Command, with 26-crew, developed a leak and almost sank after being struck by large waves in the waters west of Surabaya, East Java. F/V Carisanne II, with 6 crew aboard, reported taking on water and losing power 30-nm east of Unst, UK, on Feb. 8 at 2025. Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 102 from Sumburgh was scrambled by Shetland Coastguard and brought rescue pumps to assist the vessel and the pair-trawl vessel, Rosemount, stood by to establish a tow. 9,600-ton Pearl Harbor-based guided missile cruiser USS Port Royal ran aground a half-mile from the entrance to Pearl Harbor on Feb. 5. No injuries reported. The Port Royal, which was commissioned in July 1994, has a crew of about 360. The initial attempt to pull the $1 billion warship free on Feb. 7 was unsuccessful. Towboat Helen Lay, pushing 15 loaded coal barges up river, suffered steering failure and struck the Sherman Minton Bridge in Kentucky on Feb. 5 at 500LT. Interstate 64 was shut down for several hours pending structural integrity exam, causing lengthy delays for commuters from Southern Indiana. Georgian cargo M/V Almira G, Korean port Pusan to Vladivostok with 10 crew, suffered fire near the island of Bolshoy Pelis on Feb. 5. The crew were evacuated and the burning vessel was taken under tug tow to Vladivostok. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Feb. 6 2009).

 

Sailing vessel Sound Advice was in collision with tug Velma C in the Mississippi Sound, 2.5-nm southwest of Bayou Caddy, in the morning of Feb. 5. The tug was pushing 3 empty barges at the time of the accident and the sailing vessel was on a maiden voyage to Florida. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society vessel Steve Irwin collided with Japanese boat No. 3 Yushin Maru (which was accompanying the main harpoon whaling vessel Nisshin Maru) in the Antarctic Ocean on Feb. 5. The incident occurred when the crew of the Steve Irwin was attempting to intercept the transfer of a dead whale and the whaling vessel made an abrupt manuever. 1,990-gt Netherlands-registered cargo M/V Saline, with 7 crew and cargo of Bauxite, suffered fire at the entrace to the Humber, England, on Feb. 6 at 0334LT. A RAF helicopter from Leconfield was sent along with Humber Lifeboat ready to evacuate the crew, if required. The vessel is currently being towed by the Immingham-based Ports fire tug Lady Stephanie. 12,076-gt French roro ferry Pelican (IMO 9170999) allided with the Kaiser Bridge when entering the Travemünde port, Germany, on Feb. 5 at 0544LT. The Trave traffic was closed for a short time and the vessel suffered dents and breaches and was ordered to remain in port pending investigations. The vessel was allowed to depart from Lübeck-Herrenwyk on Feb. 5 shortly before midnight with destination Hanko. According to investigations of the police, the incident was caused by machine failure. Iranian crude oil platform AB of the Abuzar field, with 100 crew, suffered gas leak and fire on Feb. 3. Output is normally 60,000 barrels per day but was stopped because of the incident. No injuries reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Feb. 6 2009).

 

45-ft F/V Stella G sank at its berth at the Cumberland Wharf in Portland, Main on Feb. 4. Only parts of the wheelhouse remained visible. The vessel had aboard 200 gallons of fuel; spill was reported and booms deployed. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Feb. 6 2009).

 

304-M Liberia-flagged container M/V Pangal (IMO 9306160) collided with 99-m Russian cargo M/V Kholmogory (IMO 9109081) on Feb. 4. Both ships were underway from Antwerp toward Flushing. The ships are to be inspected on Flushing roads, but damage seems to be rather minor. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Feb. 4 2009).

 

63-ft Norwegian F/V Vårøybuen-V 16 LS, with crew of 4, ran hard aground at the North side of Sandsøya in Sande on Feb. 4 at 0600LT. The crew were evacuated. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Feb. 4 2009).

 

40-m Hamburg-based tanker Odin 1 went adrift in the port of Hamburg after unidentified persons untied its ropes on Feb. 3. The vessel drifted against a passenger M/V causing slight damage. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Feb. 4 2009).

 

Hydrofoil Rosanna, with 25 passengers aboard, ran aground on the shore of the Noordzee Canal in Amsterdam between Amsterdam-Noord and Zaandam on Feb. 2 at 1000LT. Rescue personnel helped the passengers ashore. 1 person was injured. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Tues. Feb. 3 2009).

 

70-m, 960-ton freighter Majur I, with 9 crew, suffered machine failure and ran aground in waters off the northern coast of Maumere, Sikka regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia on Jan. 13. The crew were evacuated by the Indonesian navy after they ran out of food. Meanwhile, the abandoned vessel was found to have been pilfered. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. F/V Julian, with 4 crew aboard, suffered fire approximately 100-km off the coast of Bowen, central Queensland, Australia, on Jan. 31. No injuries were reported after successful air-lift, but the vessel was completely destroyed by the blaze. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 2 2009).

 

132-ton trawler 92 Sail sank near Geoje Island off South Gyeongsang Province, Korea, on Jan. 31. Three Korean and one Chinese sailor are missing and a search operation is under way.

 

59-ton trawler Yeongjin, with 9 aboard, went missing in the East Sea (Sea of Japan) 50-km east of Ulsan on Jan. 30. Three Coast Guard ships, helicopters and a destroyer are now searching for survivors. A patrol aircraft discovered grease that looked like diesel floating on the surface 10.8 kilometers away from where the ship made its last communication. Unidentified 22-meter Iranian ship heading to Al Hamriya Port in Dubai with 30 metric tons vegetables suffered water ingress 30-km off the coast on Jan. 31. The Dubai Police and Department of Civil Defense were able to salvage the craft with a powerful pump and safely tow it to port. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 2 2009).

 

D.C. fireboat John Glenn was struck by 160-ft cruise vessel Spirit of Washington on the Potomac River on Jan. 31. The John Glenn was docked on the southwest waterfront when a gust of wind pushed the cruise vessel into the much smaller crat and damaged the pier. The John Glenn suffered a 15x1-ft. gash on its starboard full. 2 wood pilings were snapped. The John Glenn was originally part of a fleet of fire boats with the New York Fire Department and has been in service since 1962. It was purchased in 1977 by DC Fire and EMS and later completely refurbished. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 2 2009).

 

Barge RU 101, which had been working on building the Robin Rigg wind farm midway between Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, suffered failure of 3 of 5 wires anchoring it in position in the Solway Firth on Jan. 30. The alarm was raised in gale force winds after the barge started drifting towards the pylons being installed for the wind farm. Lifeboats and a Sea King helicopter helped to evacuate 36 crew while 6 others stayed aboard. One of the support vessels managed to get a tow line on board and stopped the barge's drift, which is now reported to be sitting comfortably. 36-ft F/V Mary Claire suffered fire while tied up in the Port of Los Angeles on Jan. 30. Persons on board the vessel that was tied next to it cut the burning vessel free causing it to drift into the Main Channel. Nobody was aboard. Local response agencies were able to assist immediately after the call came in. Working together to extinguish the fire, the local response agencies included Coast Guard Station Los Angeles, Baywatch Cabrillo, Los Angeles City Fire and the Los Angeles Port Police. 19-m inland passenver M/V Fitzcaraldo, capacity for 60 passengers, capsized and sank at its mooring on the Danube river in Linz on Jan. 31 at 1300LT. The vessel was raised on Feb. 1 and towed to the Linz Shipyard. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Feb. 2 2009).

 

110-m German vessel Mercator II (IMO 906510887, former passenger M/V Wappen von Hamburg) suffered water ingress through a leaking vent at the harbor of Bremerhaven. The vessel, half scrapped, is undergoing refit for cruise service. It still contains oil, asbestos and other pollutants, and was hence surrounded by oil booms. The harbor authorities requested the owner from the Virgin Island to address the problem, but it its unlikely he will react as the rebuilding of the ship was stopped months ago due to a lack of money. 181-ft. ferry Lituya, running from Ketchikan to Annette Island, Alaska, with capacity for 18 vehciles and 149 people, broke free from its moorings on Jan. 29. The vessel was discovered pushed up against rocks on Twin Sisters Island, near Port Chester. No one was aboard at the time, and the vessel was refloated on Jan. 30 and is under survey of damages. VESSEL LOSS DISPATCHES FOR JANUARY 2009


 

214-m Singapore-flagged cargo M/V Heranger (IMO 9079121) struck the bottom of the Kiel-Canal at Rendsburg, Germany, on Jan 29. The incident was described as minor. The ship safely berthed in Rostock. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Jan. 30 2009).


NSeven pirates hijacked Bahamas-flagged gas tanker M/V Longchamp, with 12 Filipino and one Indonesian crew aboard, while the vessel was transiting the Gulf of Aden on Jan. 29. The captain was briefly able to communicate and said all the crew members are safe, he said. No ransom demands have been made yet. It is a liquefied petroleum gas carrier and was fully loaded from Europe heading to the Far East. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Jan. 30 2009).


Unidentified F/V, with 5 people aboard, capsized in South China Sea on Jan. 29. They were picked up out of the water by passing cargo M/V Tran Shelf. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Jan. 30 2009).

 

198-ft bulk carrier Explorer 1, with 7 crew, reported taking on water on Jan. 28. The Coast Guard immediately launched an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew deployed to Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, in support of Operation Bahamas Turks and Caicos to assist the mariners. Once on scene, the Jayhawk crew safely hoisted the mariners who had already abandoned ship and were in their life raft. The mariners were safely transported to Providenciales. 225-m, 38,530-gt Panama-flagged bulkcarrier Blumenau (IMO 9207742) was struck by collapsed boom at the Richards Bay Dry Bulk Terminal at berth 609, South Africa, on Jan. 29. Damage to the vessel's hatch cover and hatch coaming was reported and the boom likely a total loss. Initial indications suggest the accident was a result of brake failure which led to the boom falling. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Fri. Jan. 30 2009).

 

F/V Shaligar, with crew of 2, took on water 10 miles offshore from Souter Point, South Tyneside, England, on Jan. 28. Tynemouth RNLI's all weather lifeboat Spirit of Northumberland was launched immediately, to help the stricken boat. The ingress was controlled by the Shaligar's skipper and as a precaution the RNLI lifeboat then escorted Shaligar back to her home port at North Shields. 56-m trawler Quo Vadis (IMO 7713008), from Kopervik, ran aground at Herøy near Fosnavåg on Jan. 28 at approximately 0223LT. The rescue boat Emmy Dyvi and another trawler were able to assist the ship. The fish aboard was lightered and then the ship refloated at 1400LT. Divers of the Emmy Dyvi surveyed the hull, and the ship subsequently proceeded towards Torvikholmane in the Bøfjord. 6,362-dwt trawler Ekarma-7 (IMO 8216784), with 95 crew, suffered fire and lost power 100-nm from Lopatka Point, Okhotsk sea, on Jan. 28 at 1651LT. Nearby vessels responded to assist. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen and our Moscow Correspondent Mike Voitenko (Thurs. Jan. 29 2009).

 

British cargo vessel Eliza S broke lose from its moorings in Antalya and drifted aground on Jan. 28. The vessel was successfully refloated a few hours later. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Thurs. Jan. 29 2009).

 

Vessel Costa Azul was in collision with vessel Cristian Andres approximately 30-nm from Colombia's southwestern coast on Jan. 28. The Costa Azul foundered after the collision and the Colombian navy rescued its 35 people aboard and took them to Buenaventura. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Thurs. Jan. 29 2009).

 

43,537-gt cruise ship Balmoral, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, was struck by 50-ft waves in force 8-9 gales in the Bay of Biscay on Jan. 18. Many passengers were injured, including two who suffered broken bones and were airlifted from the vessel to a hospital in Spain. The weather conditions were worse than forecast, and the ship was actually hit by much larger motions of the sea than had been anticipated before it left Dover. The cruise itinerary was altered as a result of the inclement conditions. The ship skipped scheduled calls at Tangier, Lisbon and La Rochelle. A call at Cherbourg and an overnight stay in Antwerp were added; the ship also spent one extra night in La Coruna and another in Bilbao. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Thurs. 192-m, 27,835-gt Philippines flagged cargo M/V Manhattan Princess (IMO 8029715) ran aground on the West side of the Arif Coral Shoal on Jan. 27 at 0930LT. Ferry Stena Voyager, Stranraer to Belfast with 156 passengers and 33 crew, suffered incident where a tanker-trailer broke free and was discovered hanging off the back of the vessel on Jan. 28. The vessel was quickly stabilized without report of injury, but one of the vessel's stern doors was seriously damaged. A mobile crane was to be used to remove the stricken vehicle, after which passengers would be able to safely drive their cars off the vessel. The damaged vessel is to be brought to Belfast for repairs, while a separate ferry will be arranged to take passengers on their scheduled journey. 741-ft, 38,653-gt tanker Overseas Cleliamar, flying flag of Marshall Islands and with 32 crew, lost power and drifted close to the rocky Marin County shoreline on Jan. 27. The vessel had just sailed from San Francisco Bay for Ecuador with fuel but no cargo when it lost propoulsion after it passed under the Golden Gate Bridge. Captain Dave McCloy, the bar pilot in control of the vessel, ordered an anchor lowered and had the ship manuevered close to shallow water near Point Diablo. The vessel regained power after approximately 10 minutes and was escorted by tugs back into San Francisco Bay, where it is being inspected. From our Sr. Correspondent Moria (Thurs. Jan. 29 2009).

 

6,701-gt Antigua-Barbuda flagged container BCL Iwona (IMO 9336294) suffered rudder failure and grounded on the northern embankment of the Kiel Canal at km 41 on Jan. 28. 11.5-m French F/V Valanzia II, homeport Marennes-Oléron, allided with an underwater obstruction in the Gironde estuary and sank on a water depth of 3 metres on Jan. 27. The crew of 2 was picked up by passing vessels. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Jan. 28 2009).

 

B.C. Ferry vessel Queen of Vancouver suffered onboard vehicle fire on its car deck while docked at the Tsawwassen terminal on Jan. 25. Passengers were evacuated, but not damage to the ferry or surrounding vehciles reported. The incident caused the cancelation of the 4 p.m. sailing from Swartz Bay and the 6 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen. Two employees were treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation. B.C. Ferries' newest vessel, Coastal Celebration, allided with the dock at Tsawwassen on Jan. 25. Minor damage to the rubbing strake / fender reported. No injuries reported and the vessel continued its schedule. The vessel, one of the German-built Super-C-class ferries, came into service in November. 770-m, 1,598-gt Slovakian cargo M/V Sunrise III (IMO-No. 8302923) caught fire in Rotterdam on Jan. 27 at 0930LT. The fire was under control within 45 minutes without report of injury. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Jan. 28 2009).

 

71-ft F/V George Allen took on water in the Pacific Ocean 30 miles northwest of the mouth of the Columbia River on Jan. 26. A helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria and a motor lifeboat from Station Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco, Washington, were immediately sent to help. The vessel made it safely to shore in Warrenton. 44-ft F/V Whistling Dixie, home ported in South Harpswell, Maine, took on water and began sinking 7 miles east of Biddeford Pool, Maine, on Jan. 26. The Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol rescued the two fishermen from a life raft. A second vessel, Survivor II, struck the partially submerged wreck of Whistling Dixie, but reported no injuries and only minimal damage. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. F/V Compadre, with 3 crew, caught fire 100 miles southeast of Sabine Pass on Jan. 26. A nearby research vessel rescued all crew and transported them to a nearby oil rig, where they were picked up by a Coast Guard rescue helicopter. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. An unidentified boat carrying 50 passengers from Palembang, South Sumatra to Mentok Bangka, Indonesia, sank on Jan. 26. The vessel reportedly sank slowly with no loss of life. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 26 2009).

 

Seismic vessel CGG Venturer fell off keel blocks when in a floating dock at the Orskov Yard in Frederikshavn, Denmark, on Jan. 21. The vessel is being inspected for any damage and will be moved to one of the other docks as soon as possible. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 26 2009).

 

Unidentified wooden ferry capsized on the Gianh river in central Quang Binh province in Vietnam on Jan. 25. At least 40 people reported killed. The ferry was designed to carry only 12 passengers, but was reported to by carrying 80 passengers. The passengers were on their way to a market for Lunar New Year shopping. 42-ft F/V Currency ran aground in Muskomee Bay on the north end of Raspberry Straight near Kodiak Island , Alaska, on Jan. 24. The boat, based out of Homer, is approximately 20 feet from shore. No injuries or pollution reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 26 2009).

German F/V Rasmus 3 sank off Schleimuende on Jan. 24. The sole crew member was rescued from the water by the Maasholm-based DGzRS-rescue boat Nis Randers, which responded to sighted flares. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 26 2009).

 

9 containers reportedly fell from a river barge onto the deck of the tug Papu Viento on the Parana River in the vicinity of Rosario Port, Santa Fe, Argentina, on Jan. 17. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 26 2009).

 

15-m Norwegian F/V Breisund, with crew of 3, ran aground and suffered water ingress 3 miles northeast of Ramberg in the Lofotes, Norway, on Jan. 25 at 0630LT. Rescue boat Halfdan Grieg took the vessel in tow and dewatered it. The ship was delivered in Ramberg and then towed to Sund to be slipped up for repairs. Bow damage above the waterline was reported. F/V Rose Mount ran aground on a shelf of rock near Lerwick harbor, Shetland, UK, on Jan. 23. The vessel was towed free the same day with assistance from a lifeboat crew. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 24 2009).

 

Cargo M/V Braga, with 6 crew and cargo of wheat, developed severe list and was in danger of sinking 77 n-miles northwest of La Coruna, Spain, on Jan. 24. F/V Grenna Star HL112, with 3 crew, suffered fire 12 miles east of Sunderland, UK, on Jan. 24. The vessel was safely escorted back to Hartlepool. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 24 2009).

 

97-m Estonian cargo M/V Cool Express (IMO 7809390), with 14 crew, caught fire south of Eigerøy in Rogaland on Jan. 23 at 2300LT. Rescue boat, air support and good samaritans responded. The fire was extinguished and the vessel proceeded to Egersund under own power. Two crew required hospitalization for smoke inhalation. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Barge with over 5 million gallons of heating oil and pushed by commercial tug Meredith C. Reinauer struck an unknown object and began taking on water near Execution Rocks, City Island, New York, on Jan. 22. The tug brought the barge to anchor off of Hart Island, New York. The Coast Guard confirmed no pollution, but a boom has been placed around the barge as a precautionary measure. The oil is being lightered from the barge. 51-m, 634-gt F/V Leik (IMO 7816915, ex-Taits II) ran aground at Finsnes off Olaholmen, Norway, on Jan. 23. The vessel stuck fast with a heavy list to port and suffered water ingress, but was freed on Jan. 24 with Coast Guard assistance and towed to a quay in Finnsnes. 38-m river cruise ship Chanterell was in danger of sinking in Berlin-Köpenick on the Dahme river, Germany, on Jan. 22. The fire rescue with 30 men including divers was busy the whole day long to keep the ship afloat and dewater it. Cargo M/V Alken Pasifik, with 13 crew, sank after being struck by heavy waves in Masalembo waters off Madura Island, Indonesia, on Jan. 18. All crew were rescued by vessel KM Tinto and brought to Surabaya. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 24 2009).

 

137-m Russian cargo M/V Sinegorsk, heading to Alexandria in Egypt from Oskarshamn in Russia with 25 peopleaboard, developed 15 degree list and lost 1,500 metric tons sawn timber from its decks 14 n-miles south of Newhaven, UK on Jan. 19. Belgian bunk tanker M/V Kayak 5 sank in the port of Antwerp at Quay 627 shortly after departure on Jan. 19 at 0700LT. The crew of 2 were rescued from water. The wreck was marked with a buoy and an oil boom laid out. The salvage company Antwerp Underwater Solutions was contracted to raise the wreck on Jan 20. 10,616-gt Scandlines-Ferry Prins Joachim (IMO 8703190), with 60 passengers, allided with a quay in Rostock, Germany, on Jan. 18. The vessel was able to berth with tug assistance for survey, no injuries reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 19 2009).

 

127-m, 10,965-dwt tanker Oderstern went aground in the entrance to the port of Miiduranna, Estonia, on January 10. The vessel was pulled afloat after two hours with no significant damage reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 19 2009).

 

800-ft, 65,755-dwt Bahamian-flagged bulk carrier M/V CSL Argosy, inbound to Baltimore after stopovers in Jacksonville and Newport News after departing Puerto Bolivar, Colombia ran aground near Gibson Island in the Chesapeake Bay, in the lower Craig Hill Channel just north of Annapolis, Maryland, on Jan. 17. There are no reports of pollution or injuries. Oil spill recovery equipment has been placed on stand-by should it be needed. Attempts to free the vessel using tug boats were unsuccessful. It has been determined that a portion of the vessel's cargo, iron ore, will have to be removed in order to lighten the ship and refloat it. The Coast Guard is establishing a temporary safety zone in certain waters of the Chesapeake Bay, within a 500-yard radius of the stranded vessel, located in position latitude 39° 04' 27" N longitude 076° 23' 46" W. 19-m German icebreaking tug KF Wiebeking, which was in service on the Neckar for icebreaking purposes, suffered water ingress. The reported gash will be repaired in Neckarsteinach on Jan. 19. 96-m, 1,948-gt Russian-flagged cargo M/V Vilir, Izmir to Kherson with 2,061-tons wheat, ran aground on the north of Bozcaada-Tavşanlı island, while exiting the Çanakkale Strait, on Jan. 13. The vessel refloated under own power. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).

 

A boat of the 77-m, 2,194-gt tanker M/V Orasila (IMO 9336725) capsized while attempting to bring a rope to shore south of Qaqortoq/Julianehåb in South-Greenland. Two Danish sailors died. M/V Orasila reported grounded. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).

 

Great Laker Edwin H. Gott allided with pier while docking by the Duluth port authority terminal on Jan. 16. Breach of a ballast tank was reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).

 

485-ft Antigua-Barbuda flagged container M/V Cap Tapaga (IMO 9127019), sprang a leak in the Port of Long Beach in the morning of Jan 16. An undetermined amount of fuel was spilled into the harbor before repair crews were able to patch the hull. The California Office of Spill Prevention is investigating. 22.5-m Norwegian rescue boat Harald V, of the station Rørvik, ran aground at Træna on Jan 16. The propeller was damaged, and the ship will have to be repaired on a slipway at Sandnessjøen until Jan 19. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).

 

110-m M/V Hollands Diep allided with a bridge crossing the Prinses Margriet Canal near Uitwellingerga, Netherlands, on Jan. 17. 98-m, 2,984-gt German container M/V Ute Johanna (IMO 9118355, built 1995) and 113-m, 6,036-gt Norwegian cargo M/V Jaco Spirit (IMO 8414776) collided on the Kiel Canal at Königsförde on Jan. 16. The Ute Johanna suffered some dents at the port side foreship. The Jaco Spirit berthed at the Railway Pilings in Brunsbuettel for damage assessment. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. 216-m, 26,133-grt Panama-flagged container M/V MSC Rhone (IMO 7900699), with 450 containers, grounded at the Lagos port water channel, Nigeria, on Jan. 12. Preliminary efforts to free the vessel by 3 tug boats belonging to Lagos Channel Management were unsuccessful. The Lagos channel has been closed due to the stuck ship, worsening port congestion. 85-m German inland water craft Kapstadt (ex-Klöckner 44, built 1962) suffered water ingress in the engine room while the ship was berthed in the Dradenau Harbour in Hamburg on Jan. 16. Rescue teams were able to prevent oil from leaking into the Elbe. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).


45-ft F/V Alyssa & Andrew suffered fire while tied to pier at Pigeon Cove Harbor, Massachusetts, on Jan. 13. Significant damage reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).

 

166-ft offshore supplier vessel Monarch sank near a Cook Inlet platform on Jan. 15. All 7 aboard managed to reach safety on the platform, but evacation of the platform was undertaken as a safety precaution because the supply boat is underneath the structure. Tug Vigilant on scene and Coast Guard cutter Hickory dispatched to scene with anticipated air support. The vessel is carrying 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel and is partially submerged. Chevron Corp. runs the Granite Point platform, which is 45 miles southwest of Anchorage. The Monarch's operator is Ocean Marine Services Inc. of Kirkland, Washington. 1,649-gt Panama-flagged tanker M/V Onarfjord (ex-Avant, IMO 7365966), ran aground at Florø due to a navigational mistake while entering Gunhildvågen, Norway, in the morning of Jan. 15. The vessel was refloated with tug assistance and berthed at Ewos. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).


Norwegian trawler Remøy suffered machine failure and got stuck in ice 9 miles southeast of Moffen north of Spitzbergen, Norway, on Jan. 11. On Jan. 13 the coast guard vessel Svalbard was sent from its position near Amsterdamøya to the ship and reached it on Jan. 15 at 0200LT. After the Svalbard broke up the ice, the Remøy was able to proceed with own power and reached ice free waters at 1500LT west of Danskeøya. 127-M, 7,541-gt cargo M/V Westerhaven (IMO 9202089), Belitz to Santo Tomas in Guatemala, ran aground on a reef 32 miles from Belize City in an area near Caye Glory on Jan. 14. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).

 

F/V Ocecas Valou ran aground in Worthing, West Sussex, on Jan. 14 at 0900GMT. Efforts to find the missing French skipper have been unsuccessful. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).

 

Ferry Risma Jaya, from Timika to Yahukimo, Indonesia's Papua province, with 27 people and cargo, sank in the Ewer River estuary in Asmat regency on Jan. 15. 3 people reported missing. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).

 

Cargo M/V Bangka Jaya Express, with unknown number of people aboard, was struck by heavy seas and sank in Tanjung Belikat waters off the coast of South Bangka District in Bangka Belitung province, Indonesia, on Jan 13. Rescue efforts are being hampered by bad weather in the area. The vessel was carrying staple food and construction materials from Jakarta's Sunda Kelapa harbor to Pangkalbalam harbor in Bangka Belitung, when it was hit by waves with height of up to six meters. Unidentified and out-of-service tugboat sank at the 38th Street pier in Brooklyn, New York, on Jan. 14 at 1400LT. Approximately 300 to 400 gallons of diesel fuel were reported to have spilled. Miller Environmental responded to the scene. Arrangements to salvage the vessel are being made by the D'Onofrio General Contracting Corporation. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. 99-m, 3,978-gt Isle of Man-registered cargo M/V Silva (IMO 9237010, built 2001), Riga to Denmark, ran aground south of Copenhagen, 1-km from shore, on Jan. 13 at 2310LT. Pollution control vessel Mette Miljø was dispatched to the scene. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).

 

89-m, 3,120-gt Malta-flagged cargo M/V Mirabelle (former Danish-flagged Karen Danielsen) ran aground and suffered water ingress in the Hardangerfjord, Norway, on Jan. 16. All crew were rescued by the rescue boat Borgundfjord and transferred to nearby passenger M/V Teisten. The vessel was towed to a quay in Austrepollen in the Maurangsfjord by the tug Eide Rex of Eide Marine Services AS. The vessel was stilling listing to port and some oil leakage from the submerged stern was reported. The Coast guard vessel Ålesund jointly with Hardanger IUA was trying to remove the pollution. Divers will now have to assess the damage the M/V Mirabelle suffered. The owner was requested by the Coast Guard to approve a salvage and anti pollution plan. Coast Guard vessel Leikvin was also on scene. The M/V Mirabelle previously allided with a bridge in Denmark on Mar. 3, 2005, killing one person. On Nov. 6, 2008, it allided with an oil pier and on Dec. 16, 2008 it grounded off Svenborg. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen and our correspondent Ingvald Tangen (Sat. Jan. 17 2009).


N5,500-TEU Maersk vessel Nedlloyd Barentsz, Salalah to Jeddah, was attacked by pirates in the Guld of Aden, South of Aden, on Jan. 13 at 0920CET. One zodiac carrying six pirates chased the vessel. The vessel crew followed the piracy procedure by taking evasive action and increasing speed to maximum. The vessel was pursued for half an hour, coming under fire from the pirates, before the attack was abandoned. The Master reported the incident to the authorities and was rapidly assisted with a helicopter deployed from an Indian naval ship. Further assistance arrived on the scene from both Indian and Russian naval ships who pursued the pirates. No injuries or damage to the vessel reported. The vessel continued its voyage to Jeddah. (Wed. Jan. 14 2009).

 

52.6-m trawler Topaz A (ex Haltentral, IMO 7704980, built 1978), suffered ruptured value, incurred water ingress and sank 50 miles west from Bear Island, Norway, on Jan. 13 at 1751LT. 3 nearby trawlers rushed to assist. 18 people, 2 of them with severe hypothermia were retrieved from life rafts. A tugboat belonging to PT Kurnia Tunggal which was towing an empty barge sank in high waves in Kuala Mendahara waters, East Tanjung Gabung district, on Jan. 9. The 4 crew were evacuated by their company which sent another tug boat to save them and towed the barge to the land. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Tues. Jan. 13 2009).

 

142-m Cyprus-flagged container M/V Hanse Vision (IMO 9302243) collided with the 154-m Finish roro ferry Birka Express (IMO 9302243) at point Kudensee, Germany, on Jan. 12. The"Birka Express suffered a hole in the hull and berthed in the inner harbor of Brunsbuettel where the damage was surveyed. The Hanse Vision proceeded to Kiel for investigations. Tanker M/V Petrochem Trader ran aground near the Schodack Island State Park, New York, on Jan. 11. The ship was headed downriver toward New York City at the time of the incident. Using lines, the three tugs eventually managed to pull the vessel off the mud flats near the park. The Petrochem Trader reportedly reversed course and headed up the Hudson, returning to the Port of Albany. Coast Guard officials arrived before the vessel was pulled back into the channel. 2,700-ton submarine Oyashio collided with unidentified F/V off Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture, on Jan. 10. The collision was reported minor and the F/V went to an MSDF facility under its own power. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Tues. Jan. 13 2009).

 

700-ton ferry Teratai Prima, from Parepare to the Indonesian half of Borne with 250 passengers and 17 crew, capsized in a severe storm and crashing waves in central Indonesia on Jan. 11. 250 people feared dead. 22 survivors reported. 15.7-m German F/V Nordstrom sank at the port of Leer on Jan. 11. The incident was attributed to ice pressure or a leaking vent. No pollution risk reported. The ice may prevent the wreck from being raised any time soon. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Tues. Jan. 13 2009).

 

115-m, 5,818-gt Marshall-Islands-flagged chemical tanker M/V Sichem Anne (IMO 9168257) collided with 135-m Dutch inland container M/V Margreta at the conjunction of the Dordtse Kil and the Hollands Diep, Holland, on Jan. 11. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Tues. Jan. 13 2009).

 

110-m, 3,247-t Inland water craft Cunera collided with a tanker of Somtrans on the Rhine Canal on Jan. 11. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Tues. Jan. 13 2009).

 

22-m ice-breaking tug Seeotter suffered engine failure and allided with the Moabit Bridge crossing the Spree, Germany, on Jan. 11. No injuries but serious vessel damage reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Tues. Jan. 13 2009).

 

102-m Malta-flagged cargo vessel Wilson Mo (IMO 7341702) suffered engine problems between Ålesund and Hustadvikaand, Norway, and was taken in tow by Coast Guard vessel Leikvin on Jan. 11 toward Molde in the Harøyfjord for repairs. Former Royal Navy Ship HMS Intrepid, which is being decommissioned in the Merseyside docks, UK, suffered severe fire on Jan. 8. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 10 2009).


38-ft F/V American Way grounded 50 miles southeast of Chignik, Alaska, on Jan. 7. The two crew were rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter from Kodiak Island. Salvage vessel Redeemer arrived on scene on Jan. 8 to begin assessment. Some pollution reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 10 2009).

 

60-m Dutch river cruise ship Ocean Diva Futura suffered water ingress on the Rhine while moored in Colonia on Jan. 7. The ship could be deatered with its own pumps and support by a boat of the fire rescue. The vessel proceeded to the shipyard in Deutz on Jan 8 for repairs. Panama-flagged cargo M/V Shingal caught fire while passing through the Suez Canal (from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean) on Jan. 7. Most ships were diverted around the fire, but canal officials would not allow oil tankers to pass because of the danger. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 10 2009).

 

33-m Barge Pacific Bunker 1, with jet fuel, broke from anchor and drifted aimlessly on British Columbia's central coast, possibly for days, before a local resident found it washed ashore on an isolated island, about 600-km northwest of Vancouver, on Dec. 31. The barge had been anchored about 25-km away. Five of six tanks in the hull were punctured, but the fuel had been stored in two other tanks on the deck. Crews pumped out about 20,000 litres of fuel, then towed the barge before strong winds hit the area on Jan 4. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 10 2009).


Tug Hurricane ran a barge aground on the Columbia river near the Bonneville Lock and Dam, Oregon, on Jan. 7. Response teams found no pollution, and the crew proceeded to Vancouver, Washington, where survey will take place. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 10 2009).

 

Dutch inland water craft Rijnaak, with cargo of coal, suffered water ingress and was in danger of sinking on the Rhine near Tolkamer on Jan. 6. With the assistance of rescue crews from Nijmegen, the vessel was dewatered and towed into the port of Tolkamer and safely berthed at the Europa Quay. The vessel's cargo was lightered onto another vessel. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 10 2009).

 

107-m, 3,998-gt tanker M/V Kerem D collided with 25-m F/V Miraceti 90 miles east of Cherbourg, France, on Jan. 2. The captain of F/V Miraceti was reported injured and evacuated by helicopter. The F/V Miraceti was escorted to Guernsey by F/V Félix. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 10 2009).

 

11,204-gt Norwegian Hurtigruten-ferry Richard With (IMO 9040429), with 153 passengers, ran aground in heavy winds off pier 2 at Trondheim while entering port on Jan. 6 at 0800LT. The ship suffered damage at the starboard propeller and water ingress at the propeller shaft. The situation could be controlled with the help of dewatering pumps, but as a precaution the passengers were evacuated. The vessel was later refloated with the rising tide. The vessel will probably be replaced by the Hurtigruten-ferry Nordlys which was laid up in Åndalsnes in November 2008. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 10 2009).

 

85-m, 2,901-gt Malta-flagged cargo M/V Wilson Heron (IMO 9116022) suffered engine failure and ran aground at the western Weser shore off Bremerhaven on Jan. 8. A tug was able to free the vessel and tow it to the Strom Quay in Bremerhaven where authorities started an investigation of the incident. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. NFrench navy frigate Jean de Vienne foiled attempts by Somalian pirates to seize two cargo vessels in the Gulf of Aden on Jan 4. Pirates attempted to attack an unidentified Croation ship and Panamanian ship. The French forces intercepted 19 pirates and seized weapons. (Mon. Jan. 5 2009).

 

NAn unidentified Sierra Leone cargo vessel, with over 10,000-tons silicate and oil equipment and 32 Chinese crew enroute to Republic of Djibouti, northeastern Africa, to Singapore, was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Jan. 5. 4 pirate boats gave chase to the vessel, which was able to escape without report of injury. Nearby warships responded to requests for assistance and found the vessel secure. (Mon. Jan. 5 2009).


Unidentified ferry on Nepal's Koshi River capsized on Jan. 3. 2 confirmed dead and 8 missing. More than 40 people were pulled from the water. The accident occurred about 125 miles southeast of the capital city, Kathmandu. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 5 2009).

 

Lafarge Canada aggregate barge Warrior (IMO 8885113) ran hard aground in the Enterprise Channel near Victoria on Jan 1. The vessel was refloated by 4 tugs at high tide on Jan. 4. Hull damage reported and cargo lightering required. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 5 2009).

 

Cargo M/V Golden Voyage suffered fire while undergoing repair in Sangali Fishing Port in Zamboanga City, Phillipines, on Jan. 3. The flames were extinguished by fire crews. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 5 2009).

 

54-ft F/V Patriot reported it was suffering fire approximately 15 miles southeast of Gloucester on Jan. 3. By the time rescuers arrived to the scene, only a debris field and the bodies of 2 fishermen were found. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 5 2009).

 

Antigua-Barbuda-flagged container M/V Herm (IMO 9255787) lost 11 containers overboard two miles west of IJmuiden, Holland, on Jan. 4. 10 containers drifted onto the beach between IJmuiden and Zandvoort on Jan 5. The vessel berthed safely in Amsterdam. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 5 2009). UPDATE>> 11th container was found on Jan. 6 1-km off the south pier in Ijmuiden in a water depth of 10-m. The container was recovered, but is completely destroyed. Indonesian ferry Lian Senggigi, with 35 tourist passengers, took on water and sank off Klungkung, Bali, on Jan. 2. All aboard reported safely rescued. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Mon. Jan. 5 2009).

 

11-m F/V Dalriada sank in the port of Tarbert, Argyll and Bute, Scottland, on Jan 1. No injuries reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Jan. 3 2009).

 

NNetherlands Antilles-registered cargo ship was attacked by 5 pirates in a speedboat in the Gulf of Aden on Jan. 2. Danish anti-piracy navy ship Absalon responded to the call for help and deployed an armed helicopter to the area. The helciopter fired warning shots and the Danish trade ship fired flares at the pirate vessel, which caught fire. The pirates were rescued by the Absalon crew and the pirate vessel was sunk. (Sat. Jan. 3 2009).

 

80-m Romanian inland cargo water craft Canal Services 7 ran aground on the Danube river at Schönbühel on Jan. 3. Rescue teams from Gossam, Emmersdorf, Willendorf und Melk were on scene with 70 men during the whole night to dewater the ship and patch the leakage which had a diameter of 50 centimeters. Beglian F/V Atlantis, with 6 aboard, caught fire 30 miles off the coast of Walton on the Naze, UK, on Jan. 2. Rescue units were dispatched and remained on scene until the fire was contained and the vessel was taken under tow to Zeebrugge by another vessel. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Sat. Cruise ship Carnival Sensation lost staff member overboard approximately 20 miles off Vero Beach, Florida's east coast, on Jan. 1. Eyewitness accounts indicate the incident was an accident. Other employees threw the man a life ring and the Coast Guard was notified within minutes and launched search efforts via airplane, helicopter, Coast Guard cutter and a small boat dispatched from nearby Fort Pierce. (Thurs. Jan. 1 2009).

 

149-M Antigua-Barbuda flagged cargo M/V Hvassafell (IMO 9020340), Iceland to Rotterdam, suffered water ingress in cargo hold noticed in the Beatrix Harbor at Rotterdam on Dec. 28. The ingress caused a chemical reaction in the cargo of aluminum by-products. The reaction was controlled and rescue services were stood down on Dec. 30. The water ingress may have been caused by a leaking valve, though the ship also had encountered bad, but not unusual, weather underway from Iceland to Rottterdam. 71-ft F/V Lady Boss, with 3 crew, took on water and sank near Oregon Inlet, North Carolina, on Dec. 31 at 1808LT. The crew donned their survival suits and climbed to the pilothouse, which was the only part of the vessel still above water when rescue crews arrived. 598-ft oil tanker Baltic Commander One lost propulsion and allided with pier at Conley Terminal in South Boston on Dec. 31. No major damage to the vessel was reported, though a portion of the pier was damaged. 4 tug boats moved the ship to the Black Falcon Terminal, its original destination. USS Cassin Young, a World-War II-era ship first commissioned in 1943 and retired in 1960 and which is now part of a national park exhibit at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, suffered fire on Dec. 31 at 1000LT. The fire was caused by a boiler used to heat the vessel. The fire was quickly extinguished with no injuries reported. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Thurs. Jan. 1 2009).

 

620-ft U.S.-flagged freighter Manistee allided with CSX Swing Bridge on the St. Joseph River, Michigan, on Dec. 30. Coast Guard Sector Field Office Grand Haven responded. Damage to the bridge's fendering system was reported, though structural engineers determined the bridge remains safe for rail traffic. Super Ferry 12, with 647 passengers and 136 crew, suffered engine problems off Batangas province, Philippines, on Dec. 31. The vessel was forced to proceed under single engine power as it made its way to the port of Manila. 2 Coast Guard vessels were deployed to extend assistance to the the ferry, which safely docked at the port of Manila.
