The Cargo Letter Cargo Damage Dispatches

Back By Popular Demand

We're sorry, but there were so many sinkings, explosions, pirate attacks, fires, cargo mishaps, & other disasters at sea that we do not have room to print even the highlights this month. 100's of people lost their lives at sea this month!! Terrorist attack on M/T Linberg! Also, follow our daily coverage of the West Coast Port Crisis! -- all online. Also, follow our daily West Coast Crisis reports!

As just 2 examples of our online features this month

Container M/V Alva Star has been salvaged after running into a cliff at full cruising speed. The 2,987 TEU containership was en route from Haifa to Kepec, Croatia, on Oct. 3 when it ran into a 100 meter high cliff on the SE corner of Zakinthos Island, Greece, burying it's bulbous bow in rocks. The cause was reportedly human error (oh, do you think?).
Yemeni security forces have raided a building in Al-Mukalla, arrested several suspects & found bomb-making materials believed to have been used in the attack on French-flag VLCC M/T Limburg on Oct. 6. The arrests follow a statement last week by Minister of Interior Rashad Al-Alimi acknowledging that the explosion & fire on the ship, which killed 1 crew, was a terrorist attack.

You can read all this month's disaster news at our special Internet web feature which provides full details of each event -- our Vessel Casualties & Pirate Activity Database. Bookmark the site and visit every day! Updated twice daily.

NOTE: The historic dangers of carriage by sea continue to be quite real. Shippers must be encouraged to purchase high quality marine cargo insurance from their freight forwarder or customs broker. It's dangerous out there.
