"No Right Turn".

But They Turned Right!

June 2002 ?

A Cargo Nightmare Prize Contender !

The Time Is Thought To Be June 2002

The Place Is Thought To Be A River In The Southern United States

The Logistics Effort Is Clear

A River Towboat & Barge Has Delivered A Cargo of Heavy Electrical Equipment To Shore

Mounted On Blocks, Drop Deck Trailers Are Used To Off Load The Electrical Transformers

No "Over Height" Risks Here! This Job Is Being Done Correctly -- With Care

The Drop Deck Trailer Has Taken The Load -- It Is Now Properly Braced & Chained

Ho, Hum -- Just A Straight Pull Off The Barge For Delivery To A Construction Site

NOTE: To Properly Document This Project Cargo Move, A Young Cargo Surveyor Representing The Cargo Insurance Company -- All Fit Out With Regulation Survey Pants, Survey Shoes, & Survey Notebook Tucked Into His Left Back Pocket -- Stands By To Get Proper History For This Major Move. For High Value Cargo Like This -- You Want To Demonstrate That All Saftey Precautions Were Propery Taken.

OK -- So Let's Drive Straight off The Barge

DID WE SAY -- NO RIGHT TURN !!!

Or Perhaps It Was That Very Cheesy Ramp Situation?

Where They Using That Plywood & Rail Ties Combination For A Garden Project?

No Right Turn ! !

Did They Say "Bump it Off The Dock?" -- Or -- "Dump it Off The Dock?"

Perhaps This Was One Of Those Cellular Telephone Misunderstandings

Either Way -- This Was A Violation of The Rule: -- "No Right Turn."

UPDATE FROM OUR READER --- We Now Know Why - Thanks To Pat Sowers

"Pictures are deceiving. One cannot tell all from a photo, but it looks to me like the barge floated when the load came off it and then the barge moved. Tug captain probably saw the barge lifting so let off the throttle. Barge looks like it was beached and secured with anchors not cleats When the 80 - 90 tons came off the barge it probably bobbed up like a cork.

Notice the angle of the ramp off the front of the barge in the 1st picture compared to the 3rd picture. Also notice the change in elevation of the ramp.

Seems to me this is a simple case of not understanding how a barge works and how much water it draws loaded, vs. unloaded."

NOTE: Please Provide Us With Your Additional Information For This Loss.

EDITOR'S NOTE FOR SURVEYORS, ATTORNEYS & MARINE ADJUSTERS: The Internet edition effort of The Cargo Letter now celebrates it's 8th Year of Service -- making us quite senior in this segment of the industry. We once estimated container underway losses at about 1,500 per year. Lloyd's put that figure at about 10,000 earlier this year. Quite obviously, the reporting mechanism for these massive losses is not supported by the lines. News of these events is not posted to the maritime community. Our new project is to call upon you -- those handling the claims -- to let us know of each container loss at sea-- in confidentiality. Many of you survey on behalf of cargo interests with no need for confidentiality. Others work for the lines & need to be protected. As a respected Int'l publication, The Cargo Letter enjoys full press privileges & cannot be forced to disclose our sources of information. No successful attempt has ever been made. If a personal notation for your report is desired -- each contributor will be given a "hot link" to your company Website in each & every report. Please take moment & report your "overside" containers to us. If you do not wish attribution, your entry will be "anonymous." This will will benefit our industry -- for obvious reasons! McD

NOTE: The Cargo Letter wants you to know that by keeping the identity of our contributors 100% confidential, you are able to view our continuing series of "Cargo Disasters." Our friends send us materials which benefit the industry. The materials are provided to our news publication with complete and enforceable confidentiality for the sender. In turn, we provide these materials to you.
